The secret reason you digiscrap | Happy to Create | Digital ...

As I was going through the piles of papers and photos, magazines and letters, postcards and books collected by both of my parents, I encounted a letter, a simple letter that has brought a family secret out into the open.

We grew up only knowing and aware of my father?s side of the family. It was a small family, my father had an older sister and her son died in infancy. We didn?t have the experience of cousins. When we queried my mother about her folks, we received a variety of answers but the bottom line was they were not a part of our life. I nurtured a fantasy while I was in high school that I would track down my mother?s dad and let him know what I thought of his lack of interest in his grandchildren. However, he died six months before I graduated and I was disappointed that I would not meet this mysterious man.

A week ago, a plain letter made a bold statement. A half sister my mother?alluded to?turned out to be real and alive,?had included an email address in the letter and upon my informing her of the passing of her half sister (my mother) this Aunt responded with information about our family that began to connect the dots. She also emailed a photo of my grandfather in his early twenties. It seems we have gained more than just?one Aunt, but a second Aunt, an Uncle and a smattering of cousins. Here is a key to unraveling some of the story of who our people are.

As I review what information has been relayed, I wonder about the choices people felt they needed to make that created a schism that tore apart a family. It appears there was no abusive?behaviour but a disagreement so strong that there seemed to be no way open for forgiveness.

It is here where we, as scrapbookers, must tell our family stories as fairly and as honestly as possible. We are not only working with beautiful papers and embellishments to set the stage but we are also detectives and newspaper writers seeking to tell the whole story as impartially and fully as possible. We are also artistically creative, assembling the bits of a story and the photographs in a way that allows the viewer to linger and enjoy the history. The real secret is that it matters not whether you are?scrapbooking with past history or the present, but that you are scrapbooking. For without you, secrets remain and stories are lost.
