Low budget is no problem for cell phone filmmaker (The Upshot)

With the special-effects blockbuster "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" hitting theaters, now's a good time to remind budding auteurs that one doesn't need a hundred million dollar budget to make a good movie. In fact, with some creativity, you can make an award-winning flick for next to nothing.

Tech company Nokia recently held a competition to see who could make the best short film using only a cell phone camera. The two-minute film "Splitscreen:?a Love Story" was declared the winner. It's easy to see why. The flick's use of innovative cinematography, combined with a charming story about two travelers who find each other halfway around the world can put a smile on most anybody's face.

The director, JW Griffiths, shot the entire film on a Nokia N8 cell phone. Not too shabby, but he's hardly a newbie. According to his official site, he's filmed a commercial starring Ray Winstone ("The Departed") as well as a book trailer for best-selling author James Ellroy ("L.A. Confidential").

A "making of" video he posted highlights some of the techniques he used in the filming, including a stedi-cam. It's a lot like the ones they use in blockbusters like, well, "Transformers."

You can check out the movie below.

What Makes A Good Website For An Online Business?

A key component for a profitable internet business is knowing what makes a good website. The task is to make sure that your website not only attracts prospects, but provide them with information that they are searching for plus also to entice them with a product or service that will enable them to make progress or overcome a hurdle with their interest.

The challenge is to have good design, compelling copy and a user friendly experience but also to ensure that your website is fully search engine optimised in order for the search engines such as Google and Yahoo to index it and all the pages it contains.

So you have to ask the question of what do you want on your online business website? As any business requires customers, your first mission is to get them to the website. This is done by ensuring that you have lots of links on other websites that point back to your own. A link located on a relevant website will have a much greater value in the eyes of the search engines than having links scattered anywhere. Quality is always much better than quantity in this respect. And when lots of links are established, your website will rise up the search engines where it will be seen by those searching for the very information that you are offering.

When they arrive at your website, the prospect, and that is what they are as they have not bought anything as yet, will want to see information related to that in the link. It is no good getting someone to read and click your link only to find the landing page is on a completely different topic. Relevancy cannot be underestimated here. The prospect will want to find more relevant information and this is your opportunity to provide it for them.

Have you thought about writing some articles based on various keywords about your niche market? This gives your website added depth and relevancy which contributes to its weight and importance within the niche market. The search engines like a website to have lots of pages all with relevant content. And an article main page with lots of subpages each containing one article is an ideal structure.

It is important that a website has relevant graphics though do not go overboard and fill it with graphics for the sake of it. And don't forget to have lots of linking between the pages of the website ensuring the link wording includes top keywords that are relevant to the page that you are linking to.

And whilst your main focus may be to offer your product for sale, your website must have a sign up facility where you take the prospects email contact details in exchange for giving them a free resource such as a report, eBook or audio. They will then be on your email list for you to keep in contact by sending them helpful information, plus also to make them aware that your product can help their interest in progressing or overcoming a hurdle.

As can be seen, what makes a good website for an internet business is not one or two elements, but a combination of various methods to make your website attractive not just to the visitor but also to the search engines.

Pay off credit cards and auto loan to get a ... - Finance Talking Hub

I've had credit for 1 year and 5 months i have 10 inquires and i'm really looking to get a new auto loan for 15000 i have a credit score around 640-670. as a debt collector i go with experian and it is 664. knowing that i've also had my new job for 3 months and my own business for 2 years. i make about 36,000 + and my debt is around 7,000. so should i pay everything off and close it out or should i keep my credit cards with the longest amount of time 1 yr and 5 months so i can show i'm making payments i know the 30% rule as well. So i need to know the best way to get an auto loan fast! please feel free to email

Why the haste to get a new auto? getting you further into debt! Pay off your old bills first and get your finances on an even keel before plunging more debt! have a good day.

Why so many inquiries on your report? and why the need for a new auto worth 15,000+? with a score that low, you need to pay off your existing debt first before getting further into it. Leave 2-3 revolving credit lines open (oldest ones) and pay down the balances to nearly nothing or off completely. then don't use them. If you try to get a loan right now, you may be turned down, need a co-signer or get really bad interest rates.

Asian stock markets slip on Europe debt fears (AP)

BANGKOK ? Asian markets dropped Monday amid fears of a spreading European debt crisis after a ratings agency placed Italian banks on a review for a possible downgrade.

Oil prices fell below $91 a barrel as a stronger U.S. dollar made crude more expensive for investors with other currencies. The greenback was higher against the euro and the yen on safe-haven buying.

Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 0.7 percent to 9,609.64, South Korea's Kospi lost 1 percent to 2,069.61, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng slipped 0.7 percent to 22,025.35, amid worries over whether debt-drenched Greece would be able to enact a slew of harsh austerity measures in order to receive a chunk of its multibillion euro bailout.

If those measures fail to win parliamentary approval, the country would be at serious risk of defaulting on its debts, a prospect that could unleash financial shocks globally.

Tey Tze Ming, a trader at Saxo Capital Markets in Singapore, said the European debt crisis ? if it blows up and spreads beyond Greece to a major economy like Spain ? would be felt very keenly by Asian economies that are heavily dependent on exporting to Western Europe.

"In the short term, I think stocks in Asia are going to be in for a bit more pain. I think there's a lot more downside," Ming said.

Technology shares followed their U.S. counterparts lower. South Korea's Hynix Semiconductor, one of the world's leading computer chip makers, was 4.7 percent down. Japanese chipmaker Elpida Memory slipped 1.7 percent, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing lost 1.4 percent.

But tumbling oil prices, which translate into lower fuel costs, helped sustain airline shares. Air China Ltd. rose 5.3 percent in Hong Kong. Taiwan's EVA Airways Corp. was 1 percent higher. Korean Air Lines Co. rose 0.4 percent.

Australia's ASX/S&P 200 lost 1.1 percent to 4,457 amid a banking sector slip. Commonwealth Bank of Australia, the country's largest lender, dropped 1.3 percent, while Westpac Banking Corp., which ranks No. 2, lost 0.4 percent.

Benchmarks in Singapore, Indonesia and Taiwan were also lower, while mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.4 percent to 2,757.31.

Meanwhile, Italian banks were down sharply Friday on the Milan stock exchange after ratings agency Moody's said it was considering downgrading their credit worthiness.

Moody's Investors Service placed the long-term debt and deposit ratings of 16 Italian banks and two Italian government-related financial institutions on review for a possible downgrade.

On Wall Street, stocks fell Friday after poor earnings reports from two major technology companies suggested that companies invested less in new technology as the economic recovery slowed.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 1 percent to 11,934.58. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 1.2 percent to 1,268.45. The Nasdaq composite fell 1.3 percent to 2,652.89.

The U.S. economy has cooled since late April. Recent reports on housing, employment, manufacturing and retail sales all have been weak. The debt crisis in Greece and fears that China's growth is slowing have also pushed markets lower.

In energy trading, benchmark oil for August delivery was down 81 cents to $90.39 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude rose 14 cents to settle at $91.16 on Friday.

In currencies, the euro weakened $1.4125 from $1.4171 on Friday in New York. The dollar ticked up to 80.75 yen from 80.52 yen.

Anglican Mainstream ? Blog Archive ? How queer and poly ...

The impact of?gay marriage (see the coverage on NY) on the rest of us?is just beginning to be manifest ? see below from the New York Press, especially on 'non-monogamy' (formerly known as 'the affair' or 'being unfaithful'). According to its practitioners, gay marriage operates according to?different ground rules?from?traditional marriage,?which make it?more progressive and trendy,?even?more therapeutic (!), than traditional marriage.?This sexual opening up of marriage, launched by gay marrieds, may?(or may not) work for them, but for the rest of us this is extremely worrying.? Marriage has?meant sexual exclusivity (in theory, and often in practice)?and been the means by which women and men?attached to each other and to the?children their sexual union had created, bonding them together to rear their offspring, who need both a mother and a father.?Opening this up to other?partners?will destroy (or at least seriously damage)?this mechanism;?who most loses are the ones with greatest vulnerabilities, the children.?Below is from?the?important?poly site:? http://polyinthemedia.blogspot.com/.??

From gender-role squabbles to non-monogamy: What straight couples can learn from same-sex couples to be happier in their own marriages.

?Varied approaches to sexuality is probably the most taboo of the constructs that same-sex couples may import into marriage, and one that Coontz approaches very delicately. "I want to be very careful about how this is phrased, but there is a prevalence among some same-sex relationships, particularly gay male relationships, to establish long-term commitments while allowing for nonmonogamy," she says. "While this is not for every opposite-sex couple, just as it is not right for every same-sex couple, it is one of the ways that some people may handle the pressures of a world where people want partnerships but live long lives and have frequent opportunities."

It was just such frequent opportunities that led married New Yorkers Kurt Walters and George Karabotsos, both 48, to open up their relationship sexually. They were monogamous for the first three years of their relationship, but finally began to question whether or not it was the right choice for them?.

Thirty-nine-year-old New Yorker Mikey Rox [says] "I prefer removing the temptation by allowing my partner and me to explore, provided we are both on the same page about it and have established rules." For Mikey, it lessens the chances that his marriage will dissolve.

But is this a model that same-sex couples should be frightened of? "Quite the contrary," says Manhattan-based psychotherapist Bob Bergeron, author of The Right Side of Forty: The Guide to Happiness for Gay Men at Midlife and Beyond. "Same-sex couples might not necessarily want non-monogamous relationships, but they can learn a great deal from non-monogamous, same-sex couples about how to talk to their partners about sexual desires inside and outside of the relationship." As Bergeron explains, "talking about your desires doesn't mean you act on them, but not talking about them can create more trouble."

"Don't knock it until you've tried it," Carrellas says of non-monogamous marriages?. "An open marriage might not be for you, but perhaps there is some other area in your marriage where you could use, to your benefit, the same tools that some other couple is using to negotiate their sexuality.? Tunisia joins International Criminal Court | MAARS News

By Joe Sterling/edition.cnn.com

(CNN) ? Tunisia, the country where the Arab Spring uprisings began this year, has joined the International Criminal Court, becoming the first North African country to do so.

photo:article.wn.com

Tunisia deposited instruments of accession to the Rome Statute of the ICC to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday, which means it agrees to abide by the rules of the court.

Tunisia becomes the 116th signatory to the Rome Statute, the governing treaty of the court, which investigates and prosecutes cases of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. The statute ?will enter into force for Tunisia? on September 1.

Tunisia also is the 32nd African state, and the fourth member of the League of Arab States, to become party to the Rome Statute. The other three Arab League signatories are Comoros, Jordan and Djibouti.

The ICC welcomed the move, and Christian Wenaweser, president of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute, said he hopes other nations will follow Tunisia?s example.

?Ratifying this founding document of the International Criminal Court has become a symbol of a country?s commitment to the rule of law and the fight against impunity. I am very pleased to see that Tunisia has decided to send this strong message as an expression of a future on the basis of the rule of law,? Wenaweser, who is also Liechtenstein?s U.N. ambassador, said in a statement.

?Tunisia?s accession to the Rome Statute is also a testament of the profound changes brought about by the ?Arab Spring,? which started in Tunisia. It fulfills a central demand of peoples everywhere for societies guided by clear rules and the principle of equality before the law,? Wenaweser said.

Amnesty International praised the move.

?This kind of government action gives substance to the courageous actions of ordinary Tunisians who took to the streets to demand an end to abuses and the building of a fundamentally fair and just society,? said Salil Shetty, secretary general of Amnesty International, now in Cairo.

?All countries in the region should follow Tunisia?s example by embracing the international legal framework to protect human rights and prevent injustice.?

Amnesty said the ICC needs ?full cooperation from governments to carry out their own investigations into the most serious crimes under international law.?

?The Tunisian government must now give civil society a role in drafting strong national laws that assist in the investigation and prosecution of the most serious crimes,? Shetty said.

?Tunisia now has a strong framework for reforming its domestic criminal justice system, which will benefit everyone in Tunisia.?

Protests in Tunisia began after the self-immolation in December of a fruit vendor whose cart had been seized by police.

His suicide touched off a firestorm among Tunisians fed up with corruption, high unemployment and escalating food prices, and led to the ouster of President Zine el Abidine Ben Ali, who had been in power since 1987.

Ben Ali fled the country in mid-January, after a revolt that left at least 300 people dead and 700 wounded, a top U.N. human rights expert said last month.

The tumult touched off a wave of uprisings across North Africa and the Middle East.

A Tunisian court sentenced Ben Ali and his wife to 35 years in prison in absentia Monday after a one-day trial on corruption charges. The former ruler and his wife, Leila Trabelsi, have been living in exile in Saudi Arabia since the January revolt that ended his 23-year rule.

The couple faced a total of 93 counts stemming from the discovery of cash, weapons, jewelry and drugs in the presidential palace after the revolt. Of those, 35 counts against Ben Ali and his inner circle ? including murder and torture ? have been referred to a Tunisian military court, the state news agency Tunis Afrique Presse reported.

Syrian forces kill 15 protesters, activists say (Reuters)

AMMAN (Reuters) ? Syrian security forces shot dead at least 15 people on Friday after tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets demanding the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad, witnesses and activists said.

"Tell the world Bashar is without legitimacy," shouted several thousand protesters in the Damascus suburb of Irbin, the chants audible in a phone call to a witness at the protest.

The Local Coordination Committees, a main activists' group, said it had the names of 14 civilians killed in the merchant city of Homs, the impoverished town of Kiswa south of Damascus and in the residential district of Barzeh in the capital.

Another protester was shot dead in the town of Qusair, a rights group said.

Syrian state television blamed the killings in Barzeh on armed men who authorities say are behind the violence in the three-month uprising, and said members of security forces were wounded. Syria has expelled most foreign journalists making it hard to verify witness accounts or official statements.

"The security police first used teargas then they started shooting from rooftops when shouting against Assad continued," a Barzeh resident who gave his name as Hussam said by phone. "Three youths were killed and I saw two bodies shot in the head and the chest."

In the central cities of Homs and Hama, protesters shouted "the people want the downfall of the regime," while in Deraa, cradle of the uprising, people waved banners rejecting Assad's promise in a speech this week to launch a national dialogue.

Deraa protesters chanted slogans urging people in Damascus, which has seen fewer demonstrations than rural protest centers, to follow their lead. "People of Damascus, here in Deraa we toppled the regime," they chanted.

Protests also erupted in western coastal cities and eastern provinces near Iraq. Syrian troops swept to the northern border with Turkey on Thursday, prompting another 1,500 refugees to flee across the frontier into camps which Turkish officials say now host more than 11,000 refugees.

Syrian television said on Friday army units were "completing their deployment" in border villages. It said there had been no casualties during the operation and that soldiers were greeted with traditional welcomes of flowers and rice by residents.

Assad's repression of the protests, in which Syrian rights groups say more than 1,300 civilians have been killed, has triggered Western condemnation and a gradual escalation of U.S. and European Union economic sanctions against Syrian leaders.

Syrian authorities blame Islamist militants and armed gangs for killing more than 200 police and security personnel.

On Friday the European Union announced extended sanctions against Syria, including against three commanders of Iran's Revolutionary Guard accused of helping Damascus curb dissent. Syria denies Iran has played any role in tackling the unrest.

Four Syrian officials were also targeted, bringing to 34 the number of individuals and entities on the list which already includes Assad and his top officials.

Despite strong rhetoric among against Assad from Western leaders, there has been no suggestion they plan to go beyond economic sanctions to tougher action such as the military intervention launched against Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

WASHINGTON WORRIED

The United States, which has also imposed targeted sanctions on Syrian officials, said a reported Syrian army move to surround and target the town of Khirbat al-Joz just 500 meters (yards) from the Turkish border was a worrying development.

"Unless the Syrian forces immediately end their attacks and their provocations that are not only now affecting their own citizens but (raising) the potential of border clashes, then we're going to see an escalation of conflict in the area," U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said.

The crackdown has caused a crisis in Assad's once-warm relations with Turkey, which has become strongly critical.

Clinton said she had discussed the situation with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, and President Barack Obama had discussed it with Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan.

Davutoglu, who said Erdogan would speak to Assad on Friday, talked to Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem on Thursday and Ankara summoned the Syrian ambassador.

In an apparent easing of Ankara's criticism, Davutoglu said Assad's speech contained "positive elements in it as signals of reform," but said it was important that action followed.

At the border, only a few Syrian troops were visible on Friday, some occupying a building on a hill overlooking the border, directly across from the Turkish village of Guvecci.

Three Syrian soldiers were manning a sand-bagged machinegun post on top of a house in the Syrian border village of Khirbat al-Joz. Camps on the Syrian side of the border fence appeared deserted and no more refugees were crossing.

The United States has steadily sharpened its rhetoric toward Assad, saying he is losing credibility and must either implement promised reforms or get out of the way.

Protests have grown in northern areas following military assaults on towns and villages in the Jisr al-Shughour region of Idlib province, west of Aleppo, that sent more than 10,000 people fleeing across the 840-km (520-mile) border with Turkey.

Syrian television said hundreds of people were heading back to Jisr al-Shughour. A refugee who said he was at Yayladagi camp said on Thursday a delegation of notables from the city told people it was safe to go back, but that refugees told them there would be "no return until the fall of the (Assad) regime."

Syria, a mostly Sunni nation of 20 million with Kurdish, Alawite and Christian minorities, is vulnerable to sectarian tensions. Assad belongs to the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, and his opponents say he increasingly relies on loyalist Alawite troops and irregulars known as 'shabbiha'.

Testimony: Suspect confessed to killing 3 Pa. cops (AP)

PITTSBURGH ? At least two law enforcement officers testified Friday that a Pittsburgh man charged with killing three city police officers later confessed to the crime.

The witnesses were among the last of more than 40 to be called before the prosecution rested in the weeklong murder trial of Richard Poplawski.

The 24-year-old suspect is accused of gunning down officers Paul Sciullo II, Stephen Mayhle and Eric Kelly at his home in April 2009 when they responded to a 911 call from Poplawski's mother about a domestic dispute with her son.

In court on Friday, both Allegheny County Deputy Sheriff Troy Garrett and city police Detective James R. Smith testified that Poplawski confessed while shackled to a hospital bed the day after the slayings.

Garrett said the suspect choked up and said he was sorry about shooting the officers. Poplawski said he knew the officers had families and that "up until today he was no murderer," Garrett testified.

"He said it all just happened so fast," Garrett said. "He just didn't know what happened."

But some witnesses also said that Poplawski lashed out at the officers guarding him in the hospital, where he was taken after being arrested. At least one shot during the gunfight hit Poplawski's bulletproof vest, according to testimony.

Poplawski screamed obscenities at police in an attempt to goad them, Officer Thomas Duffola testified Friday.

"I should have killed more of you," Duffola recalled Poplawski saying.

Prosecutors also played a video of Poplawski inside a jail cell shouting that he wished he killed more police.

The defense is expected to put on its case Saturday, with jury deliberations possibly beginning that evening.

Downs blast helps Astros complete Rangers rally (Reuters)

ARLINGTON (Reuters) ? Matt Downs belted a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to cap a stunning come-from-behind 5-3 victory for the Houston Astros over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday.

The win enabled the Astros to avoid a three-game sweep in the interleague series against their state rivals, as Houston took advantage of a poor showing from the Rangers bullpen after starter Colby Lewis had pitched brilliantly.

The right-hander was in fine form, allowing just three hits through seven scoreless innings but his good work was undone by reliever Dave Bush and closer Neftali Feliz, who gave up five runs between them over the last two frames.

"I'm sure his (Feliz) arm wasn't as live as it would have been on a fresh night because he threw 40 pitches last night," Downs told reporters.

"We were actually surprised to see him in there. We figured we'd see somebody else, but thank goodness we did (see Feliz)."

Feliz entered the game with a 3-1 lead but gave up doubles to Carlos Lee and Chris Johnson, and a single to Jason Michaels to let Houston pull back one run.

A passed ball allowed Johnson to score and tie the game before Downs, pinch hitting for Clint Barmes, completed the comeback with his fifth home run of the season.

"We had the right guy in the right spot," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "We're not going to make any excuses. We didn't get it done."

Texas scored a run in the first inning and Nelson Cruz extended the lead to 2-0 with a solo blast in the fifth inning.

The Rangers tagged on another run in the eighth and had winning pitcher Mark Melancon in trouble later in the inning but failed to capitalize when Yorvit Torrealba grounded out with the bases loaded.

Tymoshenko goes on trial in Kiev

Ukrainian ex-PM Yulia Tymoshenko and her lawyer, Sergiy Vlasenko in court (24 June 2011)Mrs Tymoshenko says the charges against her are politically motivated

Ukraine's former prime minister and heroine of the 2004 Orange Revolution Yulia Tymoshenko has gone on trial in Kiev for abuse of power.

Mrs Tymoshenko has dismissed the charges, which concern natural gas contracts with Russia, as revenge by her rival, President Viktor Yanukovych.

She lost the premiership in March 2010 following a vote of no confidence.

Mrs Tymoshenko has asked the European Court of Human Rights to decide if the charges are politically motivated.

About 1,000 of her supporters gathered outside the court in Kiev, which was ringed by police.

"This is a farce and circus and not a court hearing," Mrs Tymoshenko told the judge, according to the AFP news agency.

Investigators say she agreed a 10-year contract to buy natural gas from Russia at prices that were too high and were ruinous for the Ukrainian economy. They also say she did not have cabinet approval to sign the deal.

The charges are not the first to be brought against the former prime minister.

In December, she was charged with misusing 320m euros (£270m; $425m) received by the government in 2009 for the sale of carbon credits.

The US and the EU have condemned the charges against Mrs Tymoshenko and some of her allies as selective prosecution of political opponents.

The charges carry a sentence of seven to 10 years' imprisonment.

If convicted, Mrs Tymoshenko would be out of contention for parliamentary elections due in October 2012. The next presidential election is scheduled for 2015.
