Former SEAL: Obama administration leaks ?a personal insult,? will ?get Americans killed?

TAMPA, Fla. ? Former Navy SEAL Benjamin Smith said Thursday that the Obama administration is ?leaking like a sieve? about the exploits of American special forces, and that special operations are being weakened to the point where ?it?s going to get Americans killed.?

?It doesn?t matter whether it?s Republican or Democrat,? Smith told the Daily Caller at the Republican National Convention, ?but on the field of battle if the enemy finds out what intelligence we have, they have time to change tactics. Or they sidestep us completely because they know we?re coming.?

?Then we don?t get to fight them overseas. They come here and they kill Americans.?

Smith is a spokesman for the Special Operations OPSEC Education Fund, a non-profit group of military veterans whose TV ads have been critical of President Barack Obama for quickly claiming credit after SEALs killed Osama bin Laden in 2011.

While some political observers believe Obama?s hastily called press event unintentionally compromised American intelligence collected during the raid in Abbottabad, Pakistan, Smith said he wasn?t certain.

?Was it unintentional?? he asked. ?A leak can be a mistake, or it can be intentional for either political gain or tactical or strategic advantage.?

Smith spent nearly six years as a Navy SEAL, and said he left the service when his superiors wanted him to leave the active military theater and train future SEALs instead. ?I said ?get me back out there,?? he recounted.

?I protected people for a living ? both Americans and non-Americans alike,? he told TheDC.

Smith said he was frustrated with the Obama administration?s failure to protect?Shakeel Afridi, a Pakistani doctor who helped SEAL Team Six identify bin Laden, then the leader of the al-Qaida global?terror network.

Pakistani authorities arrested Afridi shortly after the raid on bin Laden?s compound. He was convicted in May on treason charges and sentenced to 33 years in prison.

?What do you think that tells other potential intelligence sources around the world?? Smith asked. ?It says, ?Don?t give them anything. Don?t trust them or you?ll be tortured and your family will be wiped off the face of the earth.??

The White House, said Smith, should respect the quiet dignity of special operators and keep mum about what they do.

?Stop the leaks,? he said. ?Silent professionals within special operations don?t seek accolades for achievements. They go back into the shadows.?

Obama, he added, ?could take a lesson from George W. Bush, when he got Saddam Hussein.?

?The original message coming out of the press was that ?the U.S. army got him.? Then it came out weeks later that some kid noticed Saddam?s spider hole and told a soldier.?

?And it was a Delta Force guy. But they never sought or claimed credit for the work.?

Smith came back quickly to Obama?s media availability after the bin Laden ?kill raid,? saying the intelligence information collected in Abbottabad most likely went to waste.?

?If al-Qaida doesn?t know he [bin Laden] is gone, their hackles don?t go up,? he explained.

?We had a great opportunity but the administration put all that information out there. The chance of destroying al-Qaida completely was given up within a couple of hours after the raid was over.?

Smith?s voice grew louder and cracked.

?All the work that special operators have suffered for, and given their lives for, was rendered pointless,? he said, nearly shouting over a lunchtime din at the Tampa Convention Center. ?I take it as a personal insult. These kinds of leaks kill people.?

?Sorry,? he said, lowering his voice. ?I will get emotional about this. It happens.?

Tim Hightower cut from Washington Redskins

August 31, 2012 - 04:43 pm

In one of the biggest surprise cuts for not only Washington but around the NFL, the Redskins released running back Tim Hightower.

Many considered Hightower the favorite to start at tailback. But, the club opted to go with 6th round pick Alfred Morris instead.

Hightower rushed for 321 yards in five games with the Redskins last year and rushed for more than 2,000 yards in his career.

The 26-year-old was coming back from an ACL injury.

Report: Ireland hospitals to send some patients home

By NBC News staff

Hospitals in Ireland will send some patients home at weekends after the country?s public health services announced a new round of deep cuts, according to a media report Friday.

Cash-strapped hospitals will have to shut some wards on weekends as part of an effort to cut $44 million in spending on staff and overtime by the end of 2012, according to the Irish Independent.

Adam Patterson / Panos for nbcnews.com

Irish voters share their views on austerity and the economy as they prepare to vote in a referendum on the European Union's new fiscal treaty.

?

'The country is on its knees': Ireland grapples with economic collapse

The cuts were announced Thursday by senior staff at the Health Service Executive.

The health service is facing cuts of $163 million across the service, reports said.?Overall, the country's health system is running a $315 million deficit,?according to the Irish Times.

Officials said the staff shortages that the cuts would cause meant that more hospitals would have to operate "five-day" wards, according to the Independent.

That meant that patients assessed as "clinically suitable" would be sent home for weekends but would return to hospitals on Mondays.

Ghost towns tell the story of Ireland's faded dream

"Every effort has been made to target areas that do not impact on direct patient or client services," the newspaper quoted Laverne McGuinness of the?Health Service Executive?as saying.

The disability organization Inclusion Ireland condemned the cuts.

Apple patent would disable phone based on location

10 hrs.

Among a bevy of patents awarded to Apple this week was one that would enable or disable certain features of a phone depending on its location. It could be useful, but it also raises serious questions about who really owns your device.

The patent, "Apparatus and methods for enforcement of policies upon a wireless device," was pointed out by Apple Insider?Thursday. It's similar to an application made public in 2011 that would use a sensor in the phone to detect whether it was allowed to take pictures or make calls. The new patent relies on GPS, cell tower?or Wi-Fi?data to determine location, and then "changing one or more functional or operational aspects" of the device.

The suggestions for use are innocuous and practical: a movie theater that automatically sets phones to silent; a classroom that prevents outgoing calls; turning off Wi-Fi in a hospital. But it's not hard to imagine abuses of the system as well: it could be a useful tool for any oppressive regime, for instance,?or be used to force the shutdown of phones at a protest?? something that happened last year in San Francisco.

There's nothing in the patent that indicates it is going to be implemented, though iPhones and other smartphones do already have the ability to adjust things like ring volume and Wi-Fi settings depending on location. The difference this patent describes would be that it's not the user making the changes, but whoever sets "policies" in the area.

You can read?the patent in its entirety at the Patent Office's website. Apple was also awarded numerous other patents this week, from mobile payment systems to email interfaces, thought only a few are actually in use.

Five dead, 30 missing as boat capsizes off Guinea: police

Five people died and about 30 are missing after a boat capsized off the coast of Guinea on Friday, a paramilitary police source said.

The flat-bottomed boat -- known as a pirogue -- which can carry about 20 people "capsized at sea a few minutes after leaving the quay" in the direction of Kassa Island a few kilometres from the capital Conakry, the source said on condition of anonymity.

"The first rescuers have recovered five bodies and saved two people," he said, adding that about 30 people were still being sought by rescue teams.

"It was fishermen who arrived first and gave the alert ... There is a risk of catastrophe with this accident because there were a lot of women and babies in the boat," he added.

A similar accident in the beginning of the year left about 20 people dead when a boat capsized on the way from Conakry to Freetown in neighbouring Sierra Leone.

New cancer drug is ten times more potent

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Legend has it that Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door." University of Missouri researchers are doing just that, but instead of building mousetraps, the scientists are targeting cancer drugs. In a new study, MU medicinal chemists have taken an existing drug that is being developed for use in fighting certain types of cancer, added a special structure to it, and created a more potent, efficient weapon against cancer.

"Over the past decade, we have seen an increasing interest in using carboranes in drug design," said Mark W. Lee Jr., assistant professor of chemistry in College of Arts and Science. "Carboranes are clusters of three elements -- boron, carbon and hydrogen. Carboranes don't fight cancer directly, but they aid in the ability of a drug to bind more tightly to its target, creating a more potent mechanism for destroying the cancer cells."

In the study, Lee and his research team used carboranes to build new drugs designed to shut off a cancer cell's energy production, which is vital for the cell's survival. All cells produce energy through complex, multi-step processes. The key to an effective drug is targeting the process that cancer cells depend on more than healthy cells. By increasing the binding strength of a drug, a smaller dose is required, minimizing side effects and increasing the effectiveness of the therapy. With carboranes, Lee found that the drug is able to bind 10 times more powerfully.

"The reason why these drugs bind stronger to their target is because carboranes exploit a unique and very strong form of hydrogen bonding, the strongest form of interactions for drugs," Lee said.

Lee said that this discovery also will lead to further uses for the drug.

"Too often, after radiation or chemotherapy, cancer cells repair themselves and reinvade the body," Lee said. "This drug not only selectively shuts off the energy production for the cancer cells, but it also inhibits the processes that allow those cancer cells to repair themselves. When we tested our carborane-based drugs, we found that they were unimaginably potent. So far, we have tested this on breast, lung and colon cancer, all with exceptional results."

According to Lee, this is the first study to show systematically how carboranes can improve the activity of a drug. Lee believes this discovery will open additional possibilities of improving drugs that are used to treat other diseases, not just cancer.

"The end result is that these new drugs could be many thousands of times more potent than the drugs that are used in the clinics today," Lee said.

While it will be several years before the new drug would be available on the market, Lee said that clinical trials could begin within the next two years. Additionally, further testing on other types of cancer is underway. The study was published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, a publication of the American Chemical Society.

No clear winners in trial of Anders Behring Breivik

Breivik got 21 years, but was found sane as he wanted. Prosecutors saw him jailed, but mishandled the psychiatric findings. And now the prime minister is feeling heat for security's slow response.

Breivik was caught on the island of Ut?ya with a Glock pistol, Ruger semi-automatic rifle, and an arsenal of ammunition after having killed 69 people at Labor party youth summer camp. He even confessed to the bomb attack on the government headquarters earlier that day that killed eight, and detailed his entire planning to police shortly after his capture.

By all measures, the case should have been over long ago. Instead, it dragged on for 13 months with a final verdict falling on Friday: The 33-year-old Norwegian and self-proclaimed militant nationalist was sentenced to the maximum sentence of 21 years? permanent detention for terrorist acts.

Now, there are renewed calls today for Jens Stoltenberg, Norway?s prime minister, to accept responsibility for failing to protect Norwegians from the attack and the slow police response that day.

After watching the trial for 10 weeks and listening to the debates since the attacks, one can?t help but feel something is lacking. In many ways, it is still not clear who really won.

Technically, Breivik did, at least on legal precedence. He was arguing to be judged sane so that his militant nationalist ideology would stand stronger. He attacked the Labor party targets because he faults them for allowing too many Muslim immigrants into Norway and thereby promoting the ?ethnic cleansing of indigenous Norwegians.? The court ruled that he was sane and not paranoid schizophrenic as the first of two forensic psychiatric reports concluded.

He also won by getting considerable media coverage of his political ideology during the trial.? Indeed, in the political manifesto he released online shortly before his killing spree, he referred to the trial as part of ?the propaganda phase? of his publicity efforts. That phase is expected to continue from prison, where he plans to write a trilogy of political books in English and correspond with supporters.

He did lose on one main point: that he be found not guilty.? Judge Wenche Elizabeth Arntzen rejected his argument that his planned massacre was a ?pre-emptive attack? to avoid a wider civil war that would ensue as a result of the Muslim colonization of Europe. Neither Norwegian law, nor the European Court of Human Rights, gives the right to assassinate government figures for extreme political purposes, she said as part of the historic 90-page verdict.

Hot spots pinpointed as earthquake trigger points: Small droplets of friction-generated melts can lead to 'megaquakes'

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego have come a step closer to deciphering some of the basic mysteries and mechanisms behind earthquakes and how average-sized earthquakes may evolve into massive earthquakes.

In a paper published in the Aug. 30 issue of the journal Nature, Scripps scientists Kevin Brown and Yuri Fialko describe new information gleaned from laboratory experiments mimicking earthquake processes. The researchers discovered how fault zones weaken in select locations shortly after a fault reaches an earthquake tipping point.

They coined such locations as "melt welts" and describe the mechanism akin to an ice skater's blade reducing friction by melting the ice surface. The mechanism may be similar to "hot spots" known in automobile brake-clutch components.

"Melt welts appear to be working as part of a complicated feedback mechanism where complex dynamic weakening processes become further concentrated into initially highly stressed regions of a fault," said Brown, first author of the study and a professor in the Geosciences Research Division at Scripps. "The process allows highly stressed areas to rapidly break down, acting like the weakest links in the chain. Even initially stable regions of a fault can experience runaway slip by this process if they are pushed at velocities above a key tipping point."

"This adds to the fundamental understanding of the earthquake process because it really addresses the question of how these ruptures become energetic and dynamic and run away for long distances," said Fialko, a paper coauthor and a professor in the Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at Scripps.

The study's results, supported by funding from the National Science Foundation, appear to help answer a longstanding paradox in seismology. Key fault zones such as the San Andreas Fault produce far too little heat from friction compared with the size and magnitude of the earthquakes they produce. Laboratory experiments show that thermal energy normally released by friction during slip can become rapidly reduced, potentially helping to account for a "low heat flow paradox." The melt welts also may help explain certain questions in earthquake rupture dynamics such as why some slowly slipping tremor-generating events can snowball into massive earthquakes if they pass a velocity tipping point.

"This may be relevant for how you get from large earthquakes to giant earthquakes," said Brown, who used the example of last year's magnitude 9.0 earthquake off Japan. "We thought that large patches of the fault were just creeping along at a constant rate, then all of a sudden they were activated and slipped to produce a mega earthquake that produced a giant tsunami."

Fialko says the melt welt finding could eventually lead to improved "shake" maps of ground-shaking intensities, as well as improvements in structural engineering plans. Future studies include investigations about why the melt welt weakening occurs and if it applies to most or all common fault zone materials, as well as field research to locate melt welts along fault zones.

The Scripps Marine Science Development Center provided the machinery used in the study's experiments.

Girls Have Exclusive Pension Planning Requires | Artyku?y szybkie ...

Converting retirement goals in to reality can be challenging-especially for unique, gender-specific hurdles must be often overcome by women, who to attain fiscal security. These problems contain lower average earnings, custody and support, parent care and longer life expectancies than men. This group of articles examines women to be helped by these special gender-based issues become better educated about financial and retirement planning. As more women have entered the staff and their pay goes toward equality with men, women now have more opportunities to save and invest for retirement. But merely growing women?s financial power won?t necessarily create a higher quality of individual retirement planning, greater participation in retirement programs, a rate of savings or smarter investing. The details tell the story:oWomen live longer-Statistically, girls outlive men by on average about five years. This means they will have to save more because they?ll have more decades of retirement to fund.oWomen save less-The women?s mean contribution rate is 6% vs. 2 months for men, based on the Ninth Annual Transamerica Business Retirement Survey (September 2008), even though savings rate for both men and women falls in short supply of the minimum suggested ten percent. Only a huge number of the women interviewed reported family retirement savings totaling over $100,000, compared to 29% of men.oWomen start saving later-Women hang retirement saving later in life than men, so they have fewer years to gather a retirement home egg.oWomen have less to invest-Generally, women have less to invest since, typically, they earn less than men.The poverty rate for all aged women is 13% according to the U.S. Census Bureau in 2008. But, the University of Michigan Retirement Research Center (May possibly 2003) found that for widows, separated and never-married women, the price jumps to more than 18. Too many depend on Social Security as their sole supply of income.Next, you?ll find out more about the pay differential between men and women-one of the main economic issues facing women as they plan for the future.Women save your self less because they generate lessDespite considerable results in the office, many women are still at a disadvantage as it pertains to earning power. No matter what measure can be used, women?s profits generally speaking remain below those received by men.According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the median earnings of full-time male workers was $43,460 in 2007. By the same measure, the average income for women was $33,437. Nevertheless the difference between women?s and men?s earnings closed slightly. In 2007, the female-to-male earnings ratio was 0.78-higher compared to the preceding all-time-high of 0.76, first recorded in 2001.Various facets contribute to these earnings differences:oWomen?s careers are interrupted more regularly for childbirth, daycare or aged parent treatment. oEven girls who gain entry into high-paying jobs can be susceptible to these demands on time and attention. More women are typically employed by osmaller companies with smaller payrolls than men. oFewer women than men are union members. oMore women than men choose not to work beyond your home. For these reasons, it could be especially important for women to become educated about retirement and financial planning programs-and to take part in employer-sponsored retirement plans.Next, we will examine the aggressive requirements that many working women face-and often encounter alone: the care of children and elderly parents. The difficulties of providing child and parent careWomen?s traditional function as caregivers for both children and elderly family unit members often demand specific financial problems and make it difficult to set aside cash for the future. This is especially true for women who?re custodial parents, determined by child support obligations that might or might not be forthcoming. According to the 2005 version of Daughter or son Support for Custodial Mothers and Fathers, an U.S. Census Bureau report, approximately 13.6 thousand parents had custody of children under 21 years. And five of every six custodial parents were women.Custodial mothers are far more likely than fathers to work part-time and have the greatest requirement for son or daughter support. However, the Census Bureau study found that among the over 11 million custodial moms, only 2.9 million were receiving the entire quantity of their court-ordered daughter or son support payments. Plainly, the unsupplemented problem of son or daughter and household help drops more often to women with simple incomes-a idea that might have a damaging effect on retirement-planning efforts.Caring for the elderlyNearly one in four of the nation?s homes is engaged in caregiving to family members or friends aged 50 or older. And about 75% of the caregivers are women. (Source: 101 Facts on the Status of Workingwomen, published in 2005 by the Company and Professional Women?s Foundation). The BPWF report also mentioned that 27% of caregivers are daughters of those receiving the care, and that feminine caregivers spend 50% more time giving care than male caregivers.Further, based on the BPWF, utilized caregivers are more prone to skip work, lose a job or career opportunity or experience different bad economic effects. And then there is the direct economic impact. Seniors living on a fixed revenue can have more difficulty paying utility bills, health-related deductibles, nursing home bills or home health fees. When the aged parent works only a little short, the caregiver could be necessary to make up the deficiency. Again, this can reduce steadily the volume open to save yourself for retirement. What girls can do to prepare for the futureFinancial planning starts with getting educated about important economic issues. That?s much less complicated as it may appear, since it just takes time to read up on funds in dozens of personal financial management books and publications on the market. These guides describe the pros and cons of assets such as mutual funds, variable annuities, certificates of deposit (CDs), money market funds and other investments; savings applications such as office retirement programs and Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs ); and the idea of risk management through life and long-term treatment insurance.Next, attain an understanding of money management. This involves monitoring your checkbook, determining where your hard earned money goes each month, and finding approaches to reduce these outflows if your income is exceeded by them. Budgeting may be the most simple, most effective way to sort out balance income and outgo, discover expenses that need to be decreased and provide a framework for handling your finances. Now could be the time to start utilising the five-step retirement-planning process:oSet targets oAnalyze present budget oDevelop techniques oChoose distinct investment alternatives oEvaluate and follow-up on your own planThis approach may help you decide how much money you?ll need at retirement and make decisions about how to start gathering that money. Real Estate Investing: 2 New Marketing Strategies [Pick One ...

What?s your real estate marketing philosophy or umbrella strategy which guides your brand and tactics?

Are you just blasting out random marketing messages based on whatever you are told you should be doing in the moment or do you have a real strategy which will ensure your long term success?

If not, it?s time you did?

2 New Marketing Strategies to Choose from: Politician vs. Philanthropist

1. Campaigning for More Real Estate Investing Business

A recent Realtor Mag article proposed a ?Mayorism? marketing strategy and asked how your marketing would be different if this was a political race rather than real estate investing. Most would instantly associate running a political campaign with lies, propaganda, slamming the competition and of course burying your dirt so the other guy doesn?t find it. Clearly, while this all works it may not be the position a lot of investors want to take.

However, there are some good takeaways from this strategy if you think about it more in depth. TV ads, hosting dinners and social media can all be good tools for real estate investing marketing as can focusing on a niche and building a team. However, the related article also suggested a more offline focused drive with online marketing as an afterthought which probably isn?t the most cost effective move today.

2. The Philanthropist Approach

Before you get all worried about this strategy cramping your real estate investing income remember that Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are both considered both 2 of the wealthiest individuals of our time and the biggest philanthropists.

This doesn?t mean giving everything away either. Rather this strategy focuses on the prospect and making it all about serving them to the maximum. Remember the more people you serve the more money you will make. Find more renters to give the American Dream, find more homeowners to bail out and find more private lenders to earn better returns and you?ll make a lot more money, almost effortlessly.

Metabolism in the brain fluctuates with circadian rhythm

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? The rhythm of life is driven by the cycles of day and night, and most organisms carry in their cells a common, (roughly) 24-hour beat. In animals, this rhythm emerges from a tiny brain structure called the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the hypothalamus. Take it out of the brain and keep it alive in a lab dish and this "brain clock" will keep on ticking, ramping up or gearing down production of certain proteins at specific times of the day, day after day.

A new study reveals that the brain clock itself is driven, in part, by metabolism, the production and flow of chemical energy in cells. The researchers focused primarily on a phenomenon known as "redox" in tissues of the SCN from the brains of rats and mice.

Redox represents the energy changes of cellular metabolism (usually through the transfer of electrons). When a molecule gains one or more electrons, scientists call it a reduction; when it loses electrons, they say it is oxidized. These redox reactions, the researchers found, oscillate on a 24-hour cycle in the brain clock, and literally open and close channels of communication in brain cells.

They report their findings in the journal Science, which also wrote a Perspective on the research. "The language of the brain is electrical; it determines what kind of signals one part of the brain sends to the other cells in its tissue, as well as the other parts of the brain nearby," said University of Illinois cell and developmental biology professor Martha Gillette, who led the study. "The fundamental discovery here is that there is an intrinsic oscillation in metabolism in the clock region of the brain that takes place without external intervention. And this change in metabolism determines the excitable state of that part of the brain."

The new findings alter basic assumptions about how the brain works, Gillette said.

"Basically, the idea has always been that metabolism is serving brain function. What we're showing is metabolism is part of brain function," she said. "Our study implies that changes in cellular metabolic state could be a cause, rather than a result, of neuronal activity."

The study team also included graduate student Yanxun Yu, postdoctoral researcher Gubbi Govindaiah, graduate student Xiaoying Ye, graduate student Liana Artinian, electrical and computer engineering professor Todd Coleman, chemistry professor Jonathan Sweedler and pharmacology professor Charles Cox. Gillette, Govindaiah, Ye, Sweedler and Cox also are affiliates of the Beckman Institute at Illinois.

Caucasus suicide bomber named as Russian widow

MOSCOW (Reuters) - An ethnic Russian woman, who was both wife and widow of Islamist militants, was named on Wednesday as the suicide bomber who killed a moderate Muslim cleric in the North Caucasus just as President Vladimir Putin was pleading for national unity.

Tuesday's assassination of Said Atsayev, 74, a prominent Sufi sheikh in the troubled province of Dagestan who had spoken out against violent Islam, heightened tensions which Putin, visiting another Muslim region, had been trying to calm.

Police said Aminat Kurbanova had posed as a pilgrim to the cleric's home and detonated an explosive belt packed with nails and ball bearings, killing Atsayev, herself and six others, including an 11-year-old boy visiting with his parents.

A security source said the woman, aged either 29 or 30, was born with the ethnic Russian family name Saprykina but converted to Islam and was married to an Islamist militant. Two previous husbands, also militants, had been killed, the source added.

Suicide missions by wives of fallen fighters, dubbed "Black Widows", has been a feature of guerrilla groups from Chechnya and neighboring Muslim regions in the past decade.

The bombing came as Putin was visiting Tatarstan, a Muslim region in central Russia. While there, he made a rousing call for religious and ethnic concord to counter extremism that has raised new concerns about the integrity of a vast nation which is home to a wide mix of faiths and cultures.

"In Dagestan, sheikh and peace blown up," read the front-page headline on Moscow newspaper Kommersant, which said 80,000 people attended the cleric's funeral after dark in his village. Widely respected, Atsayev had helped broker a pact this year to reconcile some radical Salafist Muslims with the mainstream.

His death increased tension in Dagestan in particular, prompting an official day of mourning locally, though attacks occur almost daily. They are linked to an Islamist insurgency across the North Caucasus following two post-Soviet wars pitting the Kremlin against separatists in neighboring Chechnya.

The province also saw a bloody incident on Tuesday, in which a border guard killed seven fellow soldiers at a frontier post before being shot dead. Some Russian media suggested the killer may have been recruited by Islamist militants, but officials said the matter was still under investigation.

PUTIN PLEDGE

Though some ethnic Russians have fought alongside the Islamists in the North Caucasus, the killing of Atsayev, also known as Sheikh Said Afandi al-Chirkavi, appeared to be the first such case of an ethnic Russian suicide bomber.

Insurgents in Dagestan frequently attack government and security officials and have also increasingly targeted traditional mainstream Muslim leaders who are backed by the authorities. Atsayev was among the most prominent of these.

Putin owed some of his initial popularity to his launching, when prime minister, of a second war against Chechen separatists in 1999. He then swiftly succeeded Boris Yeltsin as president.

Now, the 59-year-old leader, who started another six-year presidential term in May, is eager to prevent the militant Islam that has flourished during the insurgency in the Caucasus from gaining ground in other regions with large Muslim populations.

"We will not allow anyone to tear our country apart by exploiting ethnic and religious differences," Putin said on Tuesday in Tatarstan, a long-peaceful region with substantial oil reserves, where the senior officially backed Muslim cleric was wounded last month and one of his deputies killed.

Christian in Pakistan blasphemy case ruled a minor

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? An official medical review of a Pakistani Christian girl accused of desecrating the Quran has determined that the girl is a minor, a lawyer for the girl said Tuesday.

The finding, which means the girl will be tried in the juvenile court system, could possibly defuse what has been a highly contentious case in Pakistan, where blasphemy can be punished with life in prison or even death.

The accusations against the girl have inflamed religious tensions in Pakistan, and sparked a mass exodus of Christians from the girl's neighborhood who feared retribution from their Muslim neighbors.

About 300 of the Christians who set up camp in a field outside the capital were evicted from the site Tuesday, and their makeshift church was burned down.

The attorney, Tahir Naveed Chaudhry, said a report by a medical board investigating the age and mental state of the girl determined she was 14 years old.

He also said the board determined her mental state did not correspond to her age. It was not clear whether that meant she was mentally impaired. Some Pakistani media reports have said the girl has Down syndrome.

Chaudhry said a bail hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday, and that he would move to dismiss the case after the hearing, saying there was "no solid evidence" against his client.

He said he saw his client Saturday in the Rawalpindi prison where she's being held and that she was "weeping and crying."

The Associated Press is withholding her name because it does not generally identify underage suspects.

The girl was accused by a neighbor of burning pages of a Quran, Islam's holy book. But many aspects of the case have been in dispute since the incident surfaced a little less than two weeks ago, including her age, whether she was mentally impaired and what exactly she was burning.

The lawyer said a birth certificate provided by the church put her age at eleven years old, but in the end the medical board determined she was 14. Generally, birth certificates must be issued by the Pakistani government to be considered legal documents.

The case has spotlighted once again Pakistan's troublesome blasphemy laws that critics say can be used to settle vendettas or seek retribution. Many of Pakistan's minorities, including Christians, live in fear of being accused of blasphemy.

Hundreds of Christian families have fled the neighborhood where the girl lived, fearing a backlash from their Muslim neighbors.

Over the weekend a group of about 300 cleared out a section of land in a forested part of an Islamabad neighborhood and built the skeleton of a church from branches, complete with a cross, and were using it to hold prayer services.

Christians in the area said Tuesday that in the middle of the night, people burned their makeshift church to the ground. Then the group was evicted from the site.

By midafternoon a group of about 150 Christians had gathered in the park a few hundred meters (yards) from the clearing where the church once stood. Many had nothing to eat until an aid group delivered some rice.

"We are helpless. What can we do? We are just sitting here," said Naseem Javed, who was holding her 3-year-old son in her arms. "They don't even want us to have a place to pray."

Residents from nearby houses gathered in the clearing where the makeshift church stood. One of them, Babar Minhas, said according to city regulations the land was supposed to be an open space of trees and grass and was not to be used as a settlement.

In a sign of their clear animosity toward the Christian group, he questioned whether any of them were even from the Islamabad neighborhood where the blasphemy case originated.

Once someone is labeled as a blasphemer, even if they are never convicted, they can face vigilante justice by outraged Pakistanis. In July, thousands of people dragged a Pakistani man accused of desecrating the Quran from a police station, beat him to death and set his body alight.

The potential public backlash has also deterred many from speaking out in favor of changing or repealing the blasphemy law. Last year two prominent politicians who criticized the law were murdered, one by his own bodyguard, who then attracted adoring mobs.

Say Good-Bye to Your To-Do Lists: And While You're At It Stop ...

Posted by Dr. Daisy Sutherland on August 29, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

As a busy woman I?m sure you have a lengthy to-do list. Who doesn?t, right? The task of writing down everything you want to accomplish in one day, one week or one month can be daunting.

So why do it? You may be wondering if I?ve lost my marbles when I tell you to say good-bye to your to do lists, but I assure you I haven?t!

The typical to-do list usually consists of many unrealistic items. If you find yourself writing items that will take more than an hour to complete, don?t add them to the never-ending to-do list.

Instead of a daily, weekly or monthly to-do list consider incorporating a target list instead. What?s the difference you may be asking?

The difference between a to-do list and a target list is the amount of items included. When creating your target list keep these important points in mind:

  • Prioritize your list
  • Add only 3 to 5 items
  • Include realistic and attainable projects
  • Projects that take no more than an hour to accomplish!

Too often we will be motivated to add items such as cleaning out the garage, painting the bedroom, or making dinner for the entire week. These are huge items and if you have help they can be easily attained; however, if you are attempting to do these on your own, you must step back.

First, you must give yourself permission to not complete the target list. It is perfectly acceptable to complete just one or two items. Believe me, no one is keeping score on whether you complete your tasks or not.

Giving yourself permission will reduce stress. Celebrate each accomplishment with a little dance, yes you are allowed to celebrate!

So, would you rather have a lengthy to-do list that is unrealistic and truly unattainable? Or, would you rather incorporate a target list with 3 to 5 items that can be realistically accomplished?

Come on ladies, it?s time to say good-bye to those never ending to-do lists and incorporate a target list instead. You can do it! What task do you find most difficult to accomplish during the day?

The no excuses approach to business continuity | expertIP

Too many organizations question the value of a business continuity plan, viewing it as costly and difficult to implement. Don?t be fooled: you need to understand how an unexpected disaster can harm your business and the steps you can take to function in almost any crisis.

Don?t have the time, resources or budget to plan for a disaster that many never happen? Better think again. If your company doesn?t have a business continuity plan in place when a disaster strikes, your entire organization ? from your help desk to your customer service ? will be negatively impacted. That means lost revenues, both current and future, and the inability to deliver your product or services to your customers. Many studies show that organizations impacted by a disaster were put out of business by a major loss of computer records and permanently closed their doors within a few years.

Business continuity planning promotes the safeguarding of organizational business interests through a process that identifies potential risks and their impacts, and the implementation of appropriate responses to mitigate those risks and impacts. Proactive pre-planning reduces the total impact of a disaster and speeds up recovery.

Here are some key business continuity concepts and planning steps to help your organization plan for a disaster.

Preparing for disaster

A disaster is a sudden, unplanned event that causes damage or loss. Examples of disasters are IT business system failures, loss of company data, power outages, staff shortages and bad weather. From a business perspective, this translates to:

  • Any event that creates an inability for you to provide critical business functions for some period of time, thus impacting your customers.
  • The period when management decides to divert from normal business practices to recover from the disaster.

A basic business continuity plan

Every IT business continuity strategy must be managed by qualified staff, properly funded, and structured around a suitable industry framework (such as COBIT and ITIL). Factors to consider include:

  • Regular risk assessment(s) of IT infrastructure
  • Understanding which applications are business critical
  • Ensuring robust data replication practices
  • Availability of source code and passwords
  • Proven systems response and recovery plans
  • Adherence to change control measures for production environments.

You will need to determine what applications are vital to your business immediately, and start there. For many companies, this may be e-mail; for others, it may be the customer service or sales applications

Why business continuity?

Business continuity is the activity performed by an organization to ensure that critical business functions are preserved when an emergency, outage or disaster occurs. This planning and implementation allows staff to continue delivering products and services while maintaining a high level of customer service.

There are many good reasons to include business continuity as part of your operational model:

  • Due diligence ? It makes good business sense to prepare for disaster. By defining the essential aspects of your business and implementing a business continuity plan to preserve them, your business will dramatically increase its recovery capabilities. That means you can implement the right recovery and protection protocols when a disaster strikes and minimize financial losses.
  • Customer service ? A business continuity plan allows you to manage customer expectations and provide your products and services at all times. Proactive communications with customers on your organization?s emergency preparedness capabilities and service levels during disasters will help establish reasonable customer expectations.
  • E-business and globalization ? With the power of the Internet, business hours are now 24/7. A business continuity plan ensures that you are up and running when your customers need you.

The number-one rule of business continuity is: be prepared. That preparation starts with building a plan that suits the unique needs of your organization.

Take the next step in your planning by trying our free business continuity assessment tool.?

Syrian army drops leaflets over Damascus

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? Syrian military helicopters have dropped hundreds of leaflets over Damascus and its suburbs urging rebels to hand over their weapons or face inevitable death.

The warning comes amid a widening military offensive to recapture areas on the edge of the capital and its outskirts that have fallen into the hands of rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad.

The focus of the 17-month uprising has returned to the capital's suburbs after weeks of heavy fighting in the northern city of Aleppo.

The leaflets dropped Tuesday are signed by the armed forces and the army's general command.

The leaflets said the Syrian army is determined to "cleanse every inch of Syria" and that "gunmen" have no choice but to give up their weapons or face "inevitable death."

NM court rules for oil companies in dispute

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) ? The New Mexico Supreme Court has ruled in favor of two oil companies in a multi-million dollar dispute over royalties owed for oil and natural gas production on state land.

At issue in Friday's ruling was how royalty payments should be calculated under decades-old lease provisions.

The high court upheld a district court decision in favor of ConocoPhillips Co. and Burlington Resources Oil and Gas Co.

The companies had challenged assessments by the State Land Office that ConocoPhillips owed $18.9 million and Burlington Resources $5.6 million for underpayment of royalties.

The Land Office manages leases for oil and gas production as well as livestock grazing on state lands.

Non Profit Adopts New Business Phone System - Phonebooth

HSWC Front Desk Phonebooth (1)

The Humane Society of Williamson County (HSWC), based in Leander, TX, is a non profit?organization founded in 1979. Since HSWC manages a large volume of calls and relies heavily on volunteer support, a?flexible business phone system that?s easy to use is vital to its success.

The Challenge

Find a business phone system that?s easy to use and affordable

Before Phonebooth, HSWC was using a donated PBX that was several years old. This presented many challenges for the small staff with limited telecom experience.?The system was a poor fit for a non profit without technical staff,? said Ron Marullo, Executive Director. ?The level of expertise required to configure the system became an anchor tying us down. We needed to hire a consultant to make the smallest changes and each time, we?d get a new technician. So even the simplest changes could take hours or even days to complete,? he said.

HSWC was paying for multiple phone lines to support the PBX system and they wanted a more cost effective solution. They also needed a business phone system that made it easy to get voicemail and forward calls to team members and volunteers working remotely.?We wanted a flexible system that we could change on a daily basis. We have 350 remote volunteers, all needing periodic access to the phones. We also have employees working in and out of the office daily, so we needed a system that would make it easy for them to stay connected no matter where they were.

The Solution

Phonebooth OnDemand, a cloud based phone solution that?s flexible, easy to use and affordable

Ron investigated several options for business phone systems and quickly determined that Phonebooth was the right choice for HSWC. He liked the price point, but it was the ease of use that won him over. Because HSWC relies so heavily on volunteers, making changes to call routing ?on the fly? is a true necessity. Phonebooth allows him to make changes?anytime, anywhere.

?One of the best things about Phonebooth is that it makes it easier for us to do our work. We can add or remove users with literally the click of a button and the changes are immediately active, ? said Ron. We love the unlimited group functionality and we?ve used it in a number of ways?it?s been particularly helpful in managing our clinic volume.?

The Results

More time to focus on what matters

HSWC provides an important service to the community, its pets and its owners and Ron?s team has no shortage of work. Now, the team spends less time bogged down with managing a clunky phone system and is able to focus all of its energy on mission-critical tasks. ?Phonebooth has saved us both time and money. We used to spend hours and even days dealing with phone system issues. Now, I can spend 45 seconds logged into the Phonebooth portal and get right back to doing my job,? said Ron.

Better customer service

Ron and the HSWC team have seen a decrease in live calls to their customer care desk simply by implementing an auto-attendant (virtual receptionist). Callers are now getting a higher level of responsiveness because they are more quickly routed to the right person. ?The auto-attendant has allowed us to more efficiently route calls to the right places?plus we?re still able to triage animal care calls directly to the animal care expert on duty,? said Ron.

Increased flexibility

?The voicemail to email and ?find me, follow me? are not only convenient, but they help our remote staff stay in touch and feel more connected while they?re away from the office, said Ron. ?It also helps us resolve issues more quickly because our team can be reached for critical needs even when they?re on the go.
