World markets gain despite European debt fears (AP)

SEOUL, South Korea ? World stock markets were subdued Wednesday amid jitters over Europe's debt crisis ahead of talks among the leaders of Germany, France and troubled Greece.

In Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng reversed early declines to eke out a 0.1 percent gain to 19,045.44. Mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index also staged a comeback to gain 0.6 percent to 2,484.83. Markets in Singapore, Malaysia and India also rose.

In Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 rose 0.4 percent to 5,196.23. Germany's DAX advanced 0.2 percent to 5,178.08, while France's CAC-40 gained 0.2 percent to 2,902.26.

Wall Street, however, was set to open lower, suggesting U.S. shares may snap two gains of gains. Dow Jones industrial futures fell 0.2 percent to 11,000 while S&P 500 futures declined 0.5 percent to 1,160.

Some Asian markets suffered, however. Japan's Nikkei 225 index, Asia's largest stock market, extended earlier losses to fall 1.4 percent to 8,518.57,

South Korea's Kospi was the biggest loser, declining 3.5 percent to 1,749.16 as movements were magnified after a two-day holiday. Samsung Electronics Co. fell 3.5 percent, while Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. slid 5.4 percent. Markets in Australia and New Zealand also fell.

In New York on Tuesday, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.4 percent to close at 11,105.85 for a second straight day of gains. Broader indexes also gained.

In currencies, the dollar weakened Wednesday to 76.84 yen from 76.94 yen late in New York on Tuesday. The euro fell to $1.3650 from $1.3693.

Oil prices traded near $89 a barrel Wednesday in Asia after a U.S. crude supply report showed mixed signs about consumer demand.

Benchmark oil for October delivery was down $1.05 to $89.19 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $2.02 to end at $90.21 per barrel on the Nymex on Tuesday.
