Galaxy Note II hits 5 million mark in two months

Does the success of the plus-sized Samsung Galaxy Note II portend a rosy future for the 'phablet' market??

By Matthew Shaer / November 26, 2012

The Samsung Galaxy Note II is selling well, Samsung said this week.

Not bad for a device that occupies the murky?middle ground between small tablet and super-sized smartphone. As we noted recently, the display on the Galaxy Note II measures 5.5 inches, corner to diagonal corner, which is an inch and a half larger than the already-pretty-big 4-inch display on the new Apple iPhone 5. (For an extra point of comparison, the Kindle Fire has a 7-inch display.) It even comes with a stylus to help navigate all that screen space.?

In his review of Note II, Jared Newman of Time Magazine called the Galaxy Note II something of a "trade-off" ? more apps, more room for a bigger battery, but a little less easy to flick around.?

"The biggest problem with the Galaxy Note II is the one that?s inherent to its size: You cannot comfortably use it with one hand," Newman wrote. "Sure, you can flip through the home screen and scroll through apps with your thumb, but good luck tapping something at the top of the screen, or reaching beyond the home button to either the back or menu buttons (depending on which hand you?re using)."?

Question: Does the success of the Galaxy Note II, a close cousin of the best-selling Samsung Galaxy S III, portend a rosy future for the "phablet" market? After all, plenty of other manufacturers have gotten into the game in recent months, including HTC, which recently released a very big smartphone called the Droid DNA (more on that here).?

The answer, in our opinion, is a qualified yes. There is obviously a market for plus-sized smart phones, although demand lags behind demand for more conventionally sized devices.?

"Despite hitting the 5 million figure," writes Zack Whittaker of CNET, "the Note 2's sales are way behind that of the Galaxy S III:?Samsung sold 20 million of its flagship smartphone?in the first 100 days after its launch."?

Israel said to ease restrictions on Gaza fishing and farming

GAZA (Reuters) - Israel eased restrictions on Gaza fishermen on Saturday, further implementing a three-day-old truce brokered by Egypt after a week of fierce fighting, Palestinian officials said.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinian children headed back to school for the first time in 10 days, in another indication normal life was returning after cross-border violence in which 166 Palestinians and six Israelis were killed.

A statement from the office of Hamas Islamist Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh said Egypt had notified them that "Israel has allowed Palestinian fishermen to fish in Gaza's waters at a distance of six miles, up from three miles".

Israel had no immediate comment.

A text of the truce deal agreed on Wednesday calls on Israel to ease curbs on the coastal Gaza territory, which it has largely blockaded since Hamas, which rejects the Jewish state's right to exist, took power there in 2007.

The sides had disagreed on exactly when and how the restrictions would actually be lifted.

Israel had formally barred Gaza fishermen from heading more than three miles out into the Mediterranean Sea for about three years, its gunboats often enforcing the rule. It said its blockade was a measure to prevent weapons smuggling.

Murad Al-Issi, a member of a local fishermens' group, told Reuters his colleagues had already ventured out to the six-mile limit on Saturday, undisturbed by Israel.

"The Israeli army naval boat which used to fire and torch Palestinian boats that sailed beyond a three-mile distance watched without doing anything to prevent them," Issi said.

Palestinians say the Israeli restrictions had hampered the amount and variety of fish they could catch.

"This is a good step," Issi said, adding it would be best to be permitted double the distance.

In another apparent Israeli step to ease restrictions, Palestinian farmers tended land along the testy frontier with the Jewish state without incident, a day after Israeli troops killed a Palestinian man at a border fence.

Palestinians denounced the shooting as a violation of the ceasefire and Egypt intervened to restore calm.

On Saturday, a Reuters photographer saw farmers in the Khan Younis area working close to the Israeli frontier fence.

Hamas security officials were on patrol and Israeli soldiers looked on without interfering, but for a brief verbal exchange between one soldier and a Hamas guard, witnesses said.

The Israeli military had no immediate comment.

Israel had barred Palestinians from coming within 300 meters of the border since 2009, citing security concerns.

news in brief 200x141UK bookie Ladbrokes has restructured its communications team with Donal McCabe being appointed to head their global comms strategy. PR Week report that McCabe will start in January and the role will see him head up the company?s new Communications Council. It will oversee coordination with the media, investor relations, public affairs, consumer PR, internal communications and brand. Chief executive Richard Glynn stated just how important ?effective comms? were ?to Ladbrokes realizing its growth ambitions? and it?s believed to be very much a part of the company?s online relaunch.

UK software firm GameAccount Network has dipped its finger into another pie by agreeing to launch Aussie firm Ainsworth?s online content onto its European platforms. The deal is aimed at certain regulated markets in Europe with Italy likely to be the first to benefit from the slot games. That first game will come out in January when the country?s slot market is scheduled to open and if successful, it could hit a number of other markets. Ainsworth CEO Danny Gladstone, speaking during a full year results call, said that it?s the ?first step of an expansion strategy to establish a social and online gaming business?. Aristocrat, a bitter rival of Ainsworth in the Australian slots arena, bought out GAN?s single player internet gaming system and this deal with their rival will quash any rumors of a takeover deal.

Betfred has managed to poach Satellite Information Services (SIS) director of operations Brent Dolan. A release from SIS claimed that Fred Done head-hunted the long-time employee for a role that will be focused on the Tote and see him working on racecourses. Dolan spent 26 years with SIS and it saw him work in a number of different positions across the company.

Betway have appointed Bob Dutnall as executive director of their new operational base in Guernsey. Dutnall joins up after leaving his role as Sportingbet?s MD of European operations and in Guernsey he?ll be responsible for overseeing marketing including customer acquisition and administration for the company.

The Mistle Tones comes to town on ABC Familys 25 Days of Christmas

The Mistle-Tones?Premieres Sunday, December 9 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT)

In ?The Mistle-Tones,? Holly (Tia Mowry), blessed with an amazing singing voice, is all set to audition for the newly vacated spot in a legendary local Christmas group which was founded by her late mother years ago. Shocked and upset when the slot goes to the barely talented best friend of the group?s leader, Marci (Tori Spelling), Holly sets out to create her own musical group, The Mistle-Tones. After challenging their rivals to a sing-off on Christmas Eve, Holly finds herself on a journey to the real meaning of Christmas?with some new friends and a new love thrown in for good measure. The film also stars Jonathan Patrick Moore, Reginald VelJohnson, Tammy Townsend, Andy Gala, Megan Kathleen Duffy, and Jason Rogel. ?The Mistle-Tones? is executive produced by Maggie Malina (?Single Ladies?), from a script by Jed Elinoff & Scott Thomas (?My Super Psycho Sweet 16?), and directed by Paul Hoen (?Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam?).

I love a good christmas movie and this might just be it! Having two amazingly talented actresses as the leads is a brilliant idea from Disney. We have Tia Mowry a Disney veteran and Tori Spelling who we all know from a certain zip code. Both are greatly talented and veterans to the buisness which I?m sure will show when we get to see the movie Sunday Dec.9 . Coming with it?s own soundtrack is a lovely idea as i can?t wait to hear their christmas tunes! I also can?t wait to see the little rivalry brewing between Holly (clever name) and Marci there?s sure to be some tinsel flying when these two get into it!

To make the holiday a little brighter, ABC Family will release an accompanying ?The Mistle-Tones? movie soundtrack on Sunday, November 18. Featuring nine songs from the movie sung by the cast, the soundtrack will be available exclusively on Itunes.

Part of the Disney/ABC Television Group, ABC Family is distributed in over 97 million homes. UPDTE: Foster Family Loses Everything in House Fire

Click image to view slide show.

UPDATE 11/20/12 @ 12:45 p.m.
OLIVE HILL, KY (WSAZ) -- At the Callahan Homestead in Olive Hill, Ky., you'll find all the trimmings for a Thankgiving feast, but there's no place to prepare the meal.

"I've been asking around if anyone needs a turkey," said Juanita Callahan. "It's a shame we'll have no use for it."

Rodney and Juanita Callahan lost their home to fire Monday afternoon. It's the home 60-year-old Juanita's father built; it's a home where Juanita and Rodney raised their family; it's a home where the Callahan's where helping to raise the children of other families, as well.

The Callahan's are foster parents, and for the past 20 years have been building onto the once small farm house so others could have a chance in life.

"I opened up my home and my heart two three small girls whom I love as my own." said Juanita. "This Thanksgiving I'll bow my head and give thanks for what I still have. I don't know where we'll all be when I do that, but I'll give thanks."

Rodney, Juanita, her adult children and the two youngest of the three foster children ages four, five and nine were home at the time of the fire.

Firefighters say the fire was difficult to fight because of the additions built on creating walls behind walls and floors beneath floors. The fire was trapped inside the walls and would just all of sudden break through another wall.

No one was injured in the blaze.

ORIGINAL STORY
OLIVE HILL, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A family who opens their home to help children in need, now needs a little help of their own.

Not only did a fire destroy the house Juanita Callahan grew up in -- it took out the foster home she and her husband have been working on for three decades.

The fact that no one was hurt is always the silver lining in a situation like this. But the pain of loss is still so inescapable.

"My son comes running out and says we better get out fast," said Juanita.

The smoke could be seen for miles over the hill tops of Olive Hill, Ky. As firefighters arrived from Grayson, Olive Hill and Carter City -- Juanita could only watch and cry as the home she grew up in as a child collapsed. The fire was on Barkers Fork in Olive Hill, Ky.

"Everything was paid off and we were really looking forward to enjoying the home," said Juanita

But it was more than a home to her family and children; it was home to more than 50 children who called the old farmstead home. Rodney and Juanita Callahan are foster parents, and for the past 20 years have been building onto the once small farm house so others could have a chance in life.

?It's not just a home for you. You've opened up your home to kids in need,? explained WSAZ.com.

"Yes,? answered Juanita. ?We've been in foster care for years."

Christmas gifts were lost, along with a food pantry stocked with $10,000 worth of food. The family did manage to escape with some clothes and pictures. Now, they just need a new place for everyone to call home.

The Callahans hope to find family or friends to stay the night with until other arraignments are made.

Intel Chief Executive to Retire in May - NYTimes.com

8:21 p.m. |Update

SAN FRANCISCO ? After almost 40 years at Intel, its chief executive, Paul S. Otellini, is retiring, just as the company struggles with a momentous challenge: computing?s big shift to mobile devices.

Mr. Otellini, 62, surprised the technology world Monday by announcing that he would retire as an officer and director of the chip company this May, three years before he hits Intel?s mandatory retirement age. The board said it would immediately begin a search for a successor.

During a tenure that began in May 2005, Mr. Otellini established a strong track record. He increased Intel?s revenue 57 percent, to $55 billion at the end of 2011, and slightly widened its gross profit margin. Along the way, Mr. Otellini had to settle an antitrust suit for $1.25 billion, persuaded Apple to put Intel chips in its computers and cut 20,000 workers. Intel, the world?s largest semiconductor maker, now employs 100,000 people.

But the company?s share price has fallen about 20 percent in Mr. Otellini?s time. That is because the world of personal computers and computer servers, which Intel dominated partly through a close relationship with Microsoft, now competes with a global explosion of smartphones and tablets, which connect to large data centers. While Intel has some presence in these areas, it faces many new competitors and challenges, both to its business and to its way of thinking about products.

The right successor to Mr. Otellini, said Andrew Bryant, Intel?s chairman, would preserve Intel?s engineering-driven culture but turn it into an organization that is better able to anticipate rapidly changing consumer tastes.

?We don?t see the PC category going away, but we see that the market has changed,? Mr. Bryant said. ?We need to figure out what the market wants.?

Mr. Otellini could not be reached for comment. In a statement issued by Intel, he said that ?after almost four decades with the company and eight years as C.E.O., it?s time to move on and transfer Intel?s helm to a new generation of leadership.?

Last month Intel reported that its third-quarter net income fell 14.3 percent from a year earlier, to $3 billion, largely because of poor demand for PCs. The research firm IDC said that worldwide PC shipments fell 8.6 percent to 87.8 million units in the third quarter. Adding to the woes, Microsoft?s Windows 8 operating system, which Intel hoped would lift sales, was released in October to tepid reviews.

While they are both hurting from the PC plunge, Intel and Microsoft may be the best off of a troubled bunch. Last week, Advanced Micro Devices, Intel?s top competitor in chips for PCs, was forced to deny rumors that it was looking for a buyer. Its stock is down about 65 percent this year. Hewlett-Packard and Dell, both big PC makers, are also struggling.

Mr. Bryant said that Mr. Otellini had informed the board of his decision last Wednesday, citing a need for new leadership. He credited Mr. Otellini with putting Intel on track to produce chips that require less power. That is important both for battery-dependent smartphones and for data centers running hundreds of thousands of servers.

He also noted Mr. Otellini?s efforts in spearheading a category of lightweight laptop computers called ultrabooks, which have yet to take off in the market. Mr. Otellini also championed a wireless technology called WiMAX that never lived up to its billing.

Intel influences PC manufacturers in a number of ways. Besides designing and making the very core of their products, Intel also invests heavily in related fields; for example, through its venture arm it created a $300 million fund to promote ultrabooks. And it teaches its customers what they can do with each new generation of Intel chips, which in turn leads to new software development.

While Intel will look at both internal and external candidates, Mr. Bryant said, an internal candidate would probably prove a better fit, as that person would understand the culture. In its 45-year history, all of Intel?s five chief executives have been insiders.

Mr. Otellini?s departure is the third exit of a prominent executive from a major tech company in the last few weeks. In late October, Scott Forstall, who was the head of Apple?s mobile software development, was fired by Timothy D. Cook, the chief executive. Steven Sinofsky, the head of Windows at Microsoft, left the company a week ago, just after the introduction of Windows 8 and the Surface tablet. His brash personality led to internal clashes, and he and Steven A. Ballmer, Microsoft?s chief executive, agreed that it was time for him to go, according to a person briefed on the situation who was not authorized to speak publicly about it.

While both of those men were regarded as abrasive by those who worked with them, Mr. Otellini was not. A generally well-liked San Francisco native with an M.B.A. from Berkeley, Mr. Otellini was considered a break from Intel?s norm when he became chief because he was not formally trained in engineering.

But Ken Dulaney, an analyst with Gartner, drew a connection between the departures of the Microsoft and Intel executives.

?While Sinofsky and Otellini are gone for different reasons, underneath it similar forces are at work,? said. ?Microsoft and Intel haven?t done a good job making PCs more compelling, and people are spending their dollars for electronics differently.?

Britain recognises Syrian opposition coalition

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain recognised the fledgling Syrian National Coalition on Tuesday, joining France in saying the opposition group was the "sole legitimate representative of the Syrian people".

The announcement, by Foreign Secretary William Hague, could boost the group's chances of securing foreign aid and arms as it seeks to oust President Bashar al-Assad.

"It is strongly in the interests of Syria, of the wider region and of the United Kingdom that we support them and deny space to extremist groups," Hague told parliament, saying other European Union nations would follow suit.

The Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces, set up this month to unite diverse opposition voices, welcomed the move.

"This step is very important and I think it will encourage more Syrians to join the coalition and trust it and it will also encourage other European states to recognise it," the coalition's spokesman Walid al-Bunni said.

France was the first EU country to recognise the group, going further than Monday's EU-wide recognition of the coalition as the legitimate representatives of the "aspirations" of the Syrian people.

"It's a morale boost. It gives some credibility to the opposition, and it could lay the platform practically for more effective ways of channelling support, plus some quasi-military support," said David Butter, Middle East expert at London-based thinktank Chatham House.

Washington has pledged to work with the Syrian opposition coalition, but has stopped short of fully recognising it.

Turkey and Gulf Arab countries were quick to endorse the coalition, formed on November 11 in Doha.

ASSURANCES

Britain and France, along with the United States, led the military campaign against Libyan former leader Muammar Gaddafi last year, and Paris said it was now considering whether to arm Syria's rebels.

Britain says no option is off the table, but Hague told parliament that no decision had been taken to supply military aid. The EU has an arms embargo on Syria, which is expected to be renewed on December 1.

The West has been more wary in dealing with the Syrian opposition, due to concerns that some groups lack support on the ground and worries about Islamic radicals in the rebel ranks.

U.N. investigators have said rebel fighters may have committed war crimes.

Hague said he has received assurances from the Syrian coalition that the mainly Sunni Muslim opposition would respect Syria's other minorities and uphold human rights.

Assad allies Russia and China have so far vetoed strong U.N. Security Council action against the Syrian president.

An estimated 38,000 people have been killed in Syria since an Arab Spring-inspired uprising against Assad's autocratic rule began in March last year. The initially peaceful protests turned into an armed rebellion after harsh government crackdowns.

Is Microsoft battering China's piracy problem, or is it just another marketing ploy?

Microsoft recently won a case in a?Beijing court?against two Chinese high-tech companies for infringing the copyright of Windows, Office, and SQL Server products.?Microsoft received CN?3.18 million ($510,000) in compensation.

But one analyst believes it may be a marketing ploy in order to sell more Microsoft-branded products in the country, known to be a piracy powerhouse.?

According to Microsoft's charges, the two Chinese companies, Mainone Zhida Technology Ltd. and Mainone IT Ltd., both under the Mainone Group, had been copying, installing, and selling copyrighted Microsoft software and were asked as early as 2011 by the software giant to take actions and stop infringing its rights.?

After nine months of vain attempts to get a satisfactory response, Microsoft filed an lawsuit to a Beijing against the two companies.

"Mainone's actions were not only serious copyright infringing to Microsoft, they also put customers' safety at stake," said Microsoft China's chief legal officer?Tim Cranton to a local newspaper.

Mainone,?one of the biggest IT service providers to medium-small-sized companies in China, did not appeal.

Along with its steadily growing market share, Microsoft has been stepping up its efforts in fighting piracy in China for many years. After putting Hong Lei, the mastermind behind a popular modified and easy-to-install pirated version of Windows XP, behind bars, Microsoft came after several Chinese companies such as HISAP and Dazhong Insurance.?

But according to analyst Fang Xingdong, Microsoft's anti-piracy moves are not just to recoup its losses as a result of copyright infringement, the cases were part of a wider a marketing strategy in China.?

"To some outsiders, Microsoft looks like a victim to pirated softwares, but the companies got sued never stand a chance against Microsoft," Fang said. "There are millions of software developers out there, but why do we only hear from Microsoft?"

According to Fang, Microsoft's monopoly leaves the consumers with no choice to choose or to bargain but to turn to pirated softwares.

"In the last decade, almost all medium and large scale companies in China received legal letters from Microsoft. Microsoft then sent follow-up salesmen and asked the companies to pay or wait to get sued.," added Fang. "These anti-piracy moves are not to win the lawsuits, but to increase its sales."

In 1998, 13 years ago, I had a heart ailment which required surgical intervention. While recovering in cardiac rehabilitation, I had the unexpected opportunity to work with a colleague who practiced allopathic and alternative medicine. I was very impressed with what I saw.

Having been trained in the sciences, I decided to dive deep into this approach, serve a two-year preceptorship and test natural remedies and alternative treatments for diseases.

Israel airstrikes kill Hamas commander, 7 others

Israeli leaders indicate that a new offensive against Islamic militant commanders is underway. NBC's Martin Fletcher reports.

By Lawahez Jabari, NBC News and NBC News staff

Updated at 5 p.m. ET: TEL AVIV -- The head of the militant wing of the Palestinian Hamas movement and seven others were killed as Israel launched a series of airstrikes in Gaza Wednesday, officials said.

Hamas spokesman Fauazy Brehom told NBC News that Ahmed Jabari was killed in the attack by Israeli forces.?Jabari was the most senior commander of Hamas' military wing, the Ezzidine Al-Qassam Brigades.?

A statement from the Al-Qassam Brigades said that Israel had ?opened the gates of hell.?

In a frequently updated live blog chronicling the attacks, the Israel Defense Forces claimed it had targeted "dozens" of Hamas? medium-range underground rocket launch sites and other weapons storage facilities. The report said Israel had also intercepted 17 rockets fired from Gaza.

"If I were a senior Hamas activist - I would look for a place to hide," IDF spokesman Brgi. Gen. Yoav (Poly) Moredechai said in a statement published online.

Moredechai said the possibility of a ground invasion would not be ruled out, and emphasized that all options remain on the table. "Infantry brigades have been shifted in preparation for the operation," his statement read. "All options that allow us to cause seriously damage to Hamas and the other terrorist organizations are on the table."

A statement from the Israeli embassy blamed Hamas for launching 150 rockets at Israel's south over the past week.

Darren Whiteside / Reuters

Smoke rises after Israeli air strikes in the northern Gaza Strip on Nov. 14. Israel launched a major offensive against Palestinian militants in Gaza on Wednesday, killing the military commander of Hamas in an air strike and threatening an invasion of the enclave that the Islamist group vowed would "open the gates of hell."

"Israel has the right and duty to defend itself from terrorist attacks designed to kill thousands of its citizens," Israeli Ambassador to the United States Michael Oren said. "We are sending an unequivocal message that our citizens will not be hostage to terrorist missile fire and cross-border attacks. The scope of the IDF's defensive operation depends on Hamas and whether it takes the decision to cease firing missiles on our neighborhoods and homes."

Jabari is the most senior Hamas official to have died due to Israeli military action since the killing of Saeed Seyam four years ago.

Sources at the?Kamal Adwan and Al-Shifa hospitals?said a total of eight people had been killed and 80 injured.

A statement on the IDF website said that Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz had ?approved an expansive strike against terrorist organizations in Gaza.?

Emergency services extinguish the burned out destroyed car of Qassam top leader Ahmed Jabari after an Israeli air strike in Gaza City on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012.

?As a part of the program, a short while ago, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) struck Ahmed al-Jabari and other senior officers of Hamas' Military Wing, who were involved in planning and implementing dozens of attacks, including the kidnapping of SFC [Israeli soldier] Gilad Shalit,? it said.

The airstrike took place in central Gaza, according to the statement, which was headlined "Chief of Hamas' Military Wing Ahmed al-Jabari assassinated." The headline was later changed to "Senior Hamas operative targeted," and the statement dropped the reference to Shalit.

The statement quoted IDF spokesman Mordechai as saying military action began following the "intolerable situation in the south of the country, and seeks to harm terrorist organizations operating in the Gaza Strip."

'Forward base for Iran'
The IDF later announced it had begun "Operation Pillar of Defense."?Israel confirmed there had been several airstrikes.

In another update, the statement said the IDF had "targeted a significant number of long range rockets sites ... owned by Hamas. This deals a significant blow to the terror organizations' underground rocket launching capabilities and munitions warehouses that are owned by Hamas and other terror organizations."

"The Gaza strip, has turned it into a forward base for Iran, firing rockets and carrying out terrorist attacks against Israeli citizens.?The IDF will continue to target terrorist sites that are used to carry out terror attacks against Israeli citizens," it said.

"The IDF will continue to target sites that are used for carrying out terror attacks against the citizens of Israel while improving their daily security," it added.

An IDF statement Monday said more than 120 rockets fired from Gaza had hit Israel since Saturday and that the Israeli air force had responded with airstrikes on a number of sites.?

Jabari had survived numerous assassination attempts in the past and had served close to a decade in an Israeli jail, according to NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin.

He was widely considered the second most important figure within Hamas' overall structure after Khaled Mishaal, the head of the organization?s political bureau.

Jabari was instrumental in negotiations about the release of Shalit, Mohyeldin said.?Jabari was rarely seen in public and even more seldom filmed but he was seen accompanying Shalit to the border crossing with Egypt ahead of his handover.

US reacts; Israeli ambassador leaves Egypt
U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner said the United States "strongly" condemns the rocket fire from Gaza into southern Israel.

"There is no justification for the violence that Hamas and other terrorist organizations are employing against the people of Israel," Toner's statement read. "We call on those responsible to stop these cowardly acts immediately. We support Israel's right to defend itself, and we encourage Israel to continue to take every effort to avoid civilian casualties."

Egypt's foreign minister called Israel's airstrikes on Gaza a dangerous escalation at a critical time for the region, and called on the Israeli government to quickly halt the offensive.

Egypt's ruling Freedom and Justice Party condemned the killing of Jabari, and said Israel was using the military operation as a card in its own political game, ahead of elections in January. The party called on the international community and Arab states to act immediately to stop the massacre against the Palestinian people, adding that Israel's attacks were meant to create instability in the region.

Airport sources in Egypt confirmed to NBC News that the Israeli ambassador and other Israelis were leaving Cairo Wednesday night.

The U.N. chief also called on Israel and Palestinian Hamas militants to prevent an escalation of hostilities, urging both sides to ensure civilians will be protected, a U.N. spokesman said Wednesday.

"The Secretary-General calls for an immediate de-escalation of tensions," U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said, adding that it was a reiteration of Ban's already-stated position.

"Both sides should do everything to avoid further escalation and they must respect their obligations under international humanitarian law to ensure the protection of civilians at all times," he told reporters.

Matthew Perry On 'The Good Wife': 'Go On' Star Set For Return Appearance

Matthew Perry is headed back to "The Good Wife." According to Deadline.com, Perry will guest star on a 2013 episode of the hit CBS series, once again playing Mike Kresteva, a candidate for governor running against Peter Florrick (Chris Noth). As Perry himself noted in interviews, Kresteva is an "all-out bad guy."

That Perry is returning to "The Good Wife" at all is a bit of a coup. He appeared in two episodes at the end of last season, but further plans for Kresteva were shelved when "Go On," the NBC comedy pilot that Perry starred in, was picked up by the rival network. "Go On" has since become one of NBC's bright spots this fall and was recently picked up for a full season.

As the actor told Zap2it.com in August, the original plan was for Kresteva to appear in "nine or 10 episodes."

"I wish I could do both shows, but you just can't," Perry said in August. "So far, the two episodes they've given me are some of the best writing I've encountered."

For more on Perry and his "Good Wife" return, head over to Deadline.com.

Lana Del Rey's ?Bel Air? Video: Watch The Smoky Clip | Music News ...

Lana Del Rey

Fresh Princess Of Bel Air

Lana Del Rey?didn?t complicate things in the video for her new?Born To Die: Paradise Edition?track ?Bel Air.? A far cry from the high-concept Americana lushness of ?Ride,? the ?Bel Air? clip is just Del Rey twirling in plumes of smoke, saturated with alternating hues. Certainly, we would have welcomed something more ambitious as a visual accompaniment, but we weren?t expecting a video in the first place, so even four minutes of Del Rey?s porcelain visage is enough.

Maybe it?s fitting that ?Bel Air? is basically a lyric video without lyrics, since the song ? which is a slight, twinkly number with raspily crooned vocals from Del Rey ? is more about creating a mood than that fans can sing along. Watch the video up top.

Despite current struggles in the national economy, the outlook for the national commercial real estate market looks good. According to the annual Emerging Trends In Real Estate report released by Urban Land Institute and the accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, the national commercial real estate recovery will continue to advance in 2013 with modest gains in leasing, rents and sales prices.

The report said that recent job creation should be enough to increase absorption and drive down vacancy rates in the office, industrial and retail markets. Furthermore, the recovery the prospects in the industry are ?noticeably? better compared with last year, even though the recovery track continues to be slower-than-normal.

Stephen Blank, a senior fellow at the institute, said the following about the report.

?What these findings suggest is that, in general, the industry is moving forward bit by bit. Nothing indicates a quick turnaround for commercial real estate, but it is improving.?

The outlook for the apartment sector is also strong for 2013. The report noted that the growth in the apartment market has been the most robust of any commercial property type, and there are no signs of that growth slowing even with new construction coming online next year.

Luxury home sales soar in Denver area - Inside Real Estate News

Luxury home sales in the Denver area more than doubled in October compared with October 2011, according to a report released today by Kentwood Real Estate.

The report shows that 50 homes in the seven-county region priced at $1 million or more traded hands last month, 117.4 percent more than the 23 in October 2011.

The closed sales volume of homes soared by 124.2 percent to $73.5 million from $32.8 million, according to the report, which used Metrolist data to track sales in the counties of Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas and Jefferson.

?The report reflects what I am seeing the market,? said John Fitzpatrick, a Kentwood broker, who has been selling real estate in the Denver area since 1972.

?Luxury home sales are starting to move up the food chain,? Fitzpatrick said. ?There is a kind of a?feeding frenzy for homes up to $1.5 million. When you get beyond that, the air gets a little thinner.?

The Kentwood report shows that the average price of a luxury home that closed last month was $1.47 million, 3.1 percent higher than $1.42 million in October 2011.

?You kind of think that the guy who sells a home for $1.5 million and stays in this time zone, is going to buy a $3 million home to replace it, in some cases,? Fitzpatrick said. ?That hasn?t happened yet, but that is the way the luxury home market will recover. People will move up.?

Homes also sold considerably faster in October than they had a year earlier.

It took an average of 106 days on market to sell a luxury home last month, a 55.6 percent drop from the 239 days a year earlier.

In the first eight months of the year, buyers paid $643.6 million for single-family, luxury homes, 29.9 percent more than the $495.6 million during the same period last year. The number of luxury sales, year-to-date, jumped by 27.4 percent to 419 from 329.

Sales in October also picked up from September, bucking the typical seasonal trend of declining on a month-to-month basis in the fall. The 50 luxury home sales last month represented a 22 percent increase from the 41 in September, while the dollar volume was up 0.9 percent on a month-over-month basis.

Fitzpatrick said a lot of the luxury home sales action in the suburbs has taken place in Cherry Hills Village, the equivalent of ?beachfront property,? for the metro are.

?It?s going to take a little longer for that to roll over to Castle Pines, but it will get there,? Fitzpatrick said.

Consumer confidence among the well-heeled is ?coming around? as well as a feeling that the bottom has been passed and from a purely economic standpoint they would have been better off buying in 2009 and 2010, are among the reasons the luxury market is showing so much activity, he said.

?I think there is a little bit of pent-up demand,? Fitzpatrick said.

In one interesting trend, he said that there currently are 19 homes under construction in Cherry Hills Village.

?They are all for users,? he said. ?There is not a single spec home among them.?

They are building custom homes at a time when there are 561 single-family homes price at $1 million or above with 185, or one-third of them, under contract, according to Kentwood?s analysis.

Many of those are priced at well-below replacement price, which begs the question why someone build a home when they could surely cut a better deal with a resale luxury home?

?Some people are not using the practical side of their brains,? Fitzpatrick said. ?Some people are saying: I want to and I can, so I?m going to. They want to make their own statement and maybe make their own mistake. We all know one or two people like those.?

Obama Calls Christie, Passes Phone to Springsteen

COLUMBUS - President Obama played peacemaker today on Air Force One en route to Ohio.

On the phone with New Jersey Gov. - and Bruce Springsteen superfan - Chris Christie to discuss Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts, Obama patched in the legendary rocker, who was joining him on the flight. Springsteen has famously avoided the governor because of political differences, somewhat to Christie's dismay.

"The president told me if I had one more minute, there was someone else he wanted me to talk to," Christie told reporters at a press conference. "In times of real difficulty, he thought the only thing better than one Jersey guy was two Jersey guys, and he put Bruce Springsteen on the phone.

"Bruce said to me how proud he was of his state," Christie said. "How proud he was and how tough we are. It was a good conversation today and it was great to talk to the president - and even better to talk to Bruce."

A White House official said Christie's description was an accurate account of the conversation. But when asked about the call on the tarmac here in Columbus, Springsteen indicated he didn't want to talk about it.

"Sir, have you spoken with Gov. Christie since the storm?" a pool reporter asked Springsteen.

"Yes, we have," he replied curtly.

"What did you say?" followed the reporter.

"Sorry, I have to get ready," Springsteen said before walking off.

But when ABC's Jake Tapper jokingly tweeted about the phone conversation, Springsteen's official Twitter account retweeted it.

By bringing together @ springsteen and @ govchristie, perhaps the president's Nobel now makes a bit more sense, amirite?

Analysis: Bond investors on edge no matter who wins U.S. election

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Bond investors are, by nature, a cautious lot.

As they head into the U.S. presidential election on Tuesday uneasy, they say no matter who wins, the government will still have to deal with the "fiscal cliff" and its profound economic consequences. But one outcome in particular - a Mitt Romney victory - adds to their apprehension because it throws into doubt the status of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, with whom bond investors seem to have, well, bonded.

Investors fear that both Democratic President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Romney would struggle to reach a compromise with the leaders of the opposing party in Congress to halt $600 billion in expiring federal tax cuts and automatic spending cuts at year-end.

The lack of a resolution could push the world's biggest economy into a deep recession, a consensus view supported by analysts at the Congressional Budget Office.

"I think the current situation politically hurts us very badly in trying to deal with our problems economically," veteran bond investor Dan Fuss at Loomis Sayles in Boston said of the so-called fiscal cliff, his No. 1 worry.

Neither an Obama nor a Romney win will change Fuss' market outlook. "One of these days, interest rates are going to start up higher," said Fuss, whose firm oversees roughly $182 billion.

Interest rates recently fell to levels not seen since World War II as a result of the Federal Reserve's aggressive bond-buying actions. Many warn the Fed is only postponing a destabilizing rise in rates that would hurt economic growth.

The other major issue for bond investors is who runs the Federal Reserve. It is unclear whether Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke will go for a third term when his tenure ends in January 2014, but Romney has said he would not reappoint him if he wins.

A leadership vacuum at the Fed could unnerve investors.

"I would think that who is in charge of the Fed, as opposed to who wins the election, would be a more material driver for the bond market as well as the stock market," said Bonnie Baha, head of Global Developed Credit at DoubleLine Capital LP, which manages more than $45 billion in Los Angeles.

The yield on benchmark U.S. Treasury notes was 1.74 percent on Friday in the wake of a surprisingly strong set of domestic jobs figures. That puts the 10-year yield, a benchmark for investment returns, mortgage rates and other borrowing costs, in the middle of this year's trading range of 2.38 percent and a record low of 1.38 percent.

STRATEGIZING FOR EITHER OUTCOME

Citigroup analysts recommended in a report published Thursday that investors buy longer-dated Treasuries in case of an Obama win, assuming the market will rally. They also suggest a strategy of using interest rates derivatives to hedge against a Romney victory.

An Obama victory would send yields on U.S. 10-year Treasuries to 1.5 percent or lower from about 1.74 percent now, Barclays analysts wrote, as worries related to the "fiscal cliff" pick up. If Romney wins, some observers believe it's more likely that the fiscal cliff would be temporarily extended.

If a lame-duck Congress and the White House are not able to resolve their differences on taxes and spending, Bush-era tax cuts will expire January 1, and automatic federal spending cuts will be phased in.

Some analysts believe Romney will have an easier time achieving a deal with Congress to avert the fiscal cliff, but that the compromise might not be to the bond market's liking.

Positioning for higher interest rates in the options market has grown in recent days, a move which some analysts interpreted as traders anticipating a Romney victory. The expectation would be that increased spending and large tax cuts could worsen the deficit, but this also could spur policies that would help stocks rather than bonds.

Republicans are seen as almost certain to retain their control of the House of Representatives, according to recent polls. The party favors an extension of tax cuts for top wage-earners, while Obama and the Democrats back their expiry, along with higher taxes on top-income groups.

If Obama wins, sparring over taxes for the top two income brackets could lead to no deal and the chaotic response could drive investors to the safety of Treasuries, said John Bellows, investment management strategy analyst at Western Asset Management Co. in Pasadena, California, which manages $460 billion in assets.

"My sense is that there's more room to compromise between Romney and Senate Democrats than there is between Obama and House Republicans," Bellows said.

LIFE AFTER BERNANKE

If Romney wins and follows through with his public pronouncements, he will not re-appoint Bernanke as Fed chairman. Some on Wall Street and Washington have criticized Bernanke's loose monetary policies for hurting the U.S. dollar, stoking gasoline and food prices, and risking a surge in inflation in the future.

Still, many believe the Bernanke Fed has been a catalyst in the recovery of financial markets after they were pummeled by the global credit crunch four years ago.

In a sign of market endorsement of Bernanke's policies, the Standard & Poor's 500 has risen 50 percent since the beginning of 2009.

If Romney were to win the White House and select a different person to head the central bank, it would spell the end of an era of easy money from the Fed, said Bellows, who was former Acting Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy under Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.

On the other hand, an Obama victory should mean status quo at the Fed.

"If President Obama were re-elected, I think you could expect a continuation of monetary policy that has been laid out," said Western Asset's Bellows.
