NASA radar penetrates thick, thin of Gulf oil spill

ScienceDaily (Oct. 26, 2012) ? Researchers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena have developed a method to use a specialized NASA 3-D imaging radar to characterize the oil in oil spills, such as the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The research can be used to improve response operations during future marine oil spills.

Caltech graduate student Brent Minchew and JPL researchers Cathleen Jones and Ben Holt analyzed NASA radar imagery collected over the main slick of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill on June 22 and June 23, 2010. The data were acquired by the JPL-developed Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR) during the first of its three deployments over the spill area between June 2010 and July 2012. The UAVSAR was carried in a pod mounted beneath a NASA C-20A piloted aircraft, a version of the Gulfstream III business jet, based at NASA's Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility in Palmdale, Calif. The researchers demonstrated, for the first time, that a radar system like UAVSAR can be used to characterize the oil within a slick, distinguishing very thin films like oil sheen from more damaging thick oil emulsions.

"Our research demonstrates the tremendous potential of UAVSAR to automate the classification of oil in a slick and mitigate the effects of future oil spill tragedies," said Jones. "Such information can help spill incidence response commanders direct cleanup operations, such as the mechanical recovery of oil, to the areas of thick oil that would have the most damaging environmental impacts."

Current visual oil classification techniques are qualitative, and depend upon the skill of the people doing the assessment and the availability of skilled observers during an emergency. Remote sensing allows larger areas to be covered in a consistent manner in a shorter amount of time. Radar can be used at night or in other low-light or poor weather conditions when visual surveys can't be conducted.

Radar had previously been used to detect the extent of oil slicks, but not to characterize the oil within them. It had generally been assumed that radar had little to no use for this purpose. The team demonstrated that UAVSAR could be used to identify areas where thick oil had mixed with the surface seawater to form emulsions, which are mixtures of oil and seawater.

Identifying the type of oil in a spill is vital for assessing its potential harm and targeting response efforts. For example, thin oil consists of sheens that measure from less than 0.0002 inches (0.005 millimeters) to about 0.002 inches (0.05 millimeters) thick. Sheens generally form when little oil is released, as in the initial stages of a spill, or from lightweight, volatile components of spill material. Because sheens contain little oil volume, they weather and evaporate quickly, and are of minor concern from an environmental standpoint. Oil emulsions, on the other hand, are 0.04 inches (1 millimeter) thick, contain more oil, and persist on the ocean surface for much longer, thereby potentially having a greater environmental impact in the open sea and along the shoreline.

"Knowing the type of oil tells us a lot about the thickness of the oil in that area," said Jones.

The researchers acquired data in June 2010 along more than 3,400 miles (5,500 kilometers) of flight lines over an area of more than 46,330 square miles (120,000 square kilometers), primarily along the Gulf Coast. They found that at the time the slick was imaged by UAVSAR, much of the surface layer of the Deepwater Horizon spill's main slick consisted of thick oil emulsions.

UAVSAR characterizes an oil spill by detecting variations in the roughness of its surface and, for thick slicks, changes in the electrical conductivity of its surface layer. Just as an airport runway looks smooth compared to surrounding fields, UAVSAR "sees" an oil spill at sea as a smoother (radar-dark) area against the rougher (radar-bright) ocean surface because most of the radar energy that hits the smoother surface is deflected away from the radar antenna. UAVSAR's high sensitivity and other capabilities enabled the team to separate thick and thin oil for the first time using a radar system.

"We knew we were going to detect the extent of the spill," said Holt. "But we had this great new instrument, so we wanted to see how it would work in this extreme situation, and it turned out to be really unique and valuable, beyond all previous radar results for spills."

"We studied an unprecedented event using data collected by a sophisticated instrument and were able to show that there was a lot more information contained in the data than was apparent when we began," said Minchew. "This is a good example of how the tools of science could be used to help mitigate disasters in real time."

UAVSAR is returning to the Gulf of Mexico area this month and will image the area around the Deepwater Horizon site to look for leaks. In the future, UAVSAR data may be combined with imaging spectroscopic data from JPL's Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) instrument to further improve the ability to characterize oil spills under a broader range of environmental conditions.

In addition to characterizing the oil slick, UAVSAR imaged most of the U.S. Gulf of Mexico coastline, extending from the Florida Keys to Corpus Christi, Texas, with extensive inland coverage of the southern Louisiana wetlands around Barataria Bay, the terrestrial ecosystem that ultimately sustained the greatest oiling from the massive spill. Researchers tracked the movement of the oil into coastal waterways and marshlands, monitored impact and recovery of oil-affected wetlands, and assessed how UAVSAR can support emergency responders in future disasters.

UAVSAR is also used to detect detailed Earth movements related to earthquakes, volcanoes and glaciers, as well as for soil moisture and forestry biomass studies. For more on UAVSAR, see: http://uavsar.jpl.nasa.gov/mission_flights.html .

Results of this study are published this month in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers journal Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing. Caltech manages JPL for NASA.

Seventeen-year-old Austin Reed Sigg was formally arrested Wednesday in the death of Jessica Ridgeway, who disappeared Oct. 5. Her remains were found five days later.

Sigg had attended Standley Lake High School while also taking classes at an area tech school. He left the district in July after 11th grade and later earned a GED.

Standley Lake classmate Rachel Bradley says Sigg was interested in mortuary science. Sigg had enrolled at Arapahoe Community College, which has a mortuary science program.

Terrorist sentenced to 37 years in millennium plot

SEATTLE (AP) ? An Algerian man convicted of plotting to blow up the Los Angeles airport around the turn of the new millennium was sentenced Wednesday to 37 years in prison after previous 22-year terms were thrown out by an appeals court as too lenient.

Ahmed Ressam, who had trained with al-Qaida in Afghanistan, was arrested in December 1999 when a customs agent noticed that he appeared suspicious as he drove off a ferry from Canada onto Washington's Olympic Peninsula. A resulting search turned up a trunk full of explosives.

Ressam's capture, after a brief foot chase, prompted fears of a terrorist attack and the cancellation of Seattle's New Year's Eve fireworks.

U.S. District Judge John C. Coughenour had twice ordered him to serve 22-year terms, but both times the sentences were rejected on appeal.

This time, Ressam's attorneys conceded that he should face at least three decades to satisfy the appeals courts, but no more than 34 years.

The Justice Department, which previously sought sentences of 35 years and of life in prison, recommended a life sentence again because of the mass murder Ressam intended to inflict. In those pre-Sept. 11 days, it was "a virtually unimaginable horror," Assistant U.S. Attorney Helen Brunner told the court.

"If Mr. Ressam had succeeded," she said, "it is likely hundreds if not thousands of innocent lives would have been lost."

Brunner also argued that Ressam continues to pose a threat, as evidenced by his recantation of prior cooperation, which forced the government to dismiss charges against two coconspirators.

Ressam's lawyer, Thomas Hillier, disagreed, pointing to a letter Ressam sent the judge this week in which he wrote: "I am against killing innocent people of any gender, color or religion. I apologize for my actions."

Ressam, who made a similar statement to the court in 2003, did not speak at the hearing Wednesday.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys said they would review the ruling, and neither indicated whether they would appeal. U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan said that regardless of whether she agreed with the judge, the case represented a victory for the rule of law.

"We afforded a man who sought to do us the greatest harm the full due process of the law," she said.

Coughenour read his lengthy sentencing order from the bench, noting that of the 4,000 to 5,000 sentences he had handed down in his 31-year career, Ressam's case was the only one he could remember in which the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals deemed him too lenient.

Nevertheless he thanked the appeals judges for their guidance, saying that some cases are so long and difficult that a trial judge can lose perspective.

"This case provokes our greatest fears," Coughenour said. "Because Mr. Ressam planned this act of violence and took steps to carry it out, many, including the federal government, believe that Mr. Ressam is a continuing threat and he should never see freedom again. But fear is not, nor has it ever been, the guide for a federal sentencing judge."

The sentence reflected more than the 35 years maximum for the two most serious of the nine counts Ressam was convicted of: committing an act of terrorism across international boundaries, and carrying an explosive during the commission of a felony.

Prosecutors noted that had Ressam tried to carry out his plot after 9/11, he almost certainly would have been charged with using a weapon of mass destruction, which can carry life in prison.

Coughenour discredited the government's argument that Ressam would pose a future threat. He will be eligible for release at about age 64, and his prior cooperation with terrorism investigators would make it difficult for Ressam to become involved in any plot even if he were so inclined, the judge said.

The sentence also took into account Coughenour's belief that Ressam stopped cooperating because of the effect of extended solitary confinement. His recantation was a "deranged protest," rather than a true return to terrorist sympathies, Coughenour said.

The judge said that if the harsh conditions of his confinement were in fact what caused Ressam to stop cooperating, that shouldn't compound his sentence.

"I will not sentence a man to 50 lashes and then 50 more for getting blood on the whip," he said.

Ressam's case has been vexing because he started cooperating after he was convicted and was interviewed more than 70 times by terror investigators from the U.S., Canada, Great Britain, Spain, Italy, Germany and France. Information he provided helped convict several terror suspects; prompted the famous August 2001 FBI memo titled "Bin Laden determined to strike in U.S."; and contributed to the arrest of suspected Osama bin Laden lieutenant Abu Zubaydah, who remains in custody without charges at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

However, Ressam recanted all of his cooperation when it became clear that the prosecutors weren't going to recommend that he serve less than 27 years in prison. That forced the Justice Department to drop charges against two suspected coconspirators, Samir Ait Mohamed and Abu Doha.

In previously sentencing Ressam, Coughenour noted that before he went to trial, the government offered him a 25-year sentence if he would plead guilty ? no cooperation necessary. Ressam refused, but Coughenour said that any discount for Ressam's cooperation, while it lasted, should start from that 25-year offer.

The appeals court rejected that rationale.

Taliban deny their bombs cause most Afghan deaths

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The Taliban dismissed on Sunday a UN report that roadside bombs are causing most civilian casualties in Afghanistan as "Western propaganda."

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed that the insurgents only use the weapons to target foreign troops and the Afghan security forces.

"By spreading such propaganda they are trying to prevent us from planting bombs which cause the deaths of invaders in our country," he said in an emailed statement.

On Saturday, the UN mission in Afghanistan urged the insurgents to end the use of roadside bombs, also known as improvised explosive devices or IEDs, saying they were by far the biggest killer of civilians in the conflict. The organization used the term in reference both to bombs detonated by remote control and land mines that go off when a vehicle goes over them.

The call came a day after 19 civilians died and 15 were injured when their bus struck a mine in northern Balkh province on Friday. The UN said that blast was caused by an IED planted on a busy public road and set off by a pressure plate. It said the bomb was "consistent with documented patterns and tactics of choice by the Taliban."

Insurgent-placed homemade bombs continue to be the deadliest weapon for civilians, according to the world body. IEDs killed 340 civilians and injured a further 599 over the past nine months, an increase of almost 30 per cent compared to the same period last year, the UN said.

The Taliban spokesman denied that any insurgents were operating in the area of Balkh province where Friday's blast occurred.

He also said the Taliban use only remote-controlled roadside bombs which ? unlike the devices automatically activated by pressure-plates ? allow a bomber to choose the time of the blast and specifically target coalition troops and their Afghan allies.

About half of the casualties suffered by coalition forces in recent years have been caused by roadside bombs and mines.

Also Saturday, a service member with the NATO military coalition was killed by a bomb in the south, the alliance said in a statement. The coalition did not provide the service member's nationality or any other details about the incident. The NATO force usually waits for national authorities to give such information.

After reading this article you will find many suggestions that will make your wedding day as good as it possibly can!
Let your caterer know you want an outdoor reception. Hot sunlight and strong winds can damage certain dishes, whilst chilly weather could spoil hot meals. You could utilize fancy covers to protect the dishes. Furthermore, consider hiring a refrigerator to keep beverages cool.
If you care about the bride, you will definitely be looking for ways to make sure her wedding is everything she has dreamed of. Planning a wedding and dealing with problems will make a bride stressed and anxious. You want to just run everything by her as well as make sure there is nothing that you are missing to ensure her happiness.
A thoughtful gift for destination wedding guests to receive is a basket of vacation goodies delivered to them in their room. Include maps, cameras, hats, disposable cameras, or guides on local attractions that they may want to visit. It would be nice to also include a guide to local restaurants to make it easy for them to eat.
Plan out fun and interesting group activities for the guests and members of the wedding party. Instead of your guests simply waiting for you to come down the aisle, plan a contest or a game for your guests to partake in while waiting for the wedding to begin. There are all kinds of things you can do, contests or fun, or try something like volleyball. The more fun your guests have, the better the entire event will be for everyone.
Choose someone who has an interest in photography that you will enjoy working with. They can help you with other stuff, like gathering the family for group shots, also.
An online itinerary will facilitate a smooth experience, especially for your out-of-town guests. This schedule allows everyone to know when and where they need to be. Include events such as the rehearsal, dinners, fittings and anything else they might need to appear at.
While it may seem obvious, remember that who you plan to marry should be the biggest consideration of all! Do not make a hasty decision. You should consider the things you enjoy in your companion, as well as the things that irritate you.
If a friend of yours has something you want to wear simply as them. This can give you the look you want to achieve and make the wedding even more special.
Instead of one large, expensive wedding cake, consider serving cupcakes or several small cakes. Many bakeries offer beautiful cupcakes with a variety of healthy fillings.
Don't let wedding planning get you down! You may have a lot to worry about, but the advice in this article will make the work you have to do much easier to manage. Soon, you'll be able to stop stressing about your wedding, and start looking forward to your big day instead.

Redefine A Vacation With Great And Fun Tours

When folks talk about an escape, usually it would have hugely related to much deserved R and R, just like a four-hour day spa session and having soothing cocktails by the end of the day. Nevertheless, if you find yourself somewhere totally breathtaking, would you actually rather spend it snoozing the day away or maybe getting tipsy?

An increasing number of people are redefining a vacation by simply exposing themselves to the natural beauty open to them. Long hikes, panoramic drives, comfortably-paced bicycle rides are what they need to charge up and collect themselves. Life is too short to witness all the wonders in the world, why spend so much time with eyes shut?

Great and fun tours are for people who like to indulge all their senses and also take time to detach themselves from the claws of technological innovation and relish the ordinary yet outstanding offerings of mother nature. They don't actually need to spend a lot of money to try out everything that the area is offering. The abundance of beauty is sufficient for people to tuck away their gadgets and discover their natural imagination to actually take in the time and each of the other elements present.

There are many provisions included in the tours and many of them are laidback shows that would really allow folks to slow down their pace and be one with mother nature.

During the winter, blue whales stop by the shoreline and bask in the attention as well as interest of both local people and tourists. Around this time, there are whale-watching trips that are all very affordable. On several events, even the biggest fish on the planet, the whale sharks show up very much to the delight of sightseers.

One more laidback provision that adventures have is the horse ride along the coasts with a stop at the legendary lighthouse and then the nearby bush. Many are fond of this because the walk can be very long and tiresome, specifically for people who are not fond of taking the "number 11 bus."

The ponies are well trained for all types of people, young and old and the pace is exactly right to get to view and marvel at the wonders of nature.

Folks who would like something far more physical to be able to exercise the muscles that they don't get to just for spending long hours of their days work in a cubicle, you can get surfing trips available.

The waves of the various seashores are great for paddle boarders and different kinds of surfers.

Individuals who prefer to broaden their understanding of the culture of the first occupants of the land can join the cultural visits. These tours are certainly not simple and easy "walk" tours but tourists are even provided a chance to feel several of the approaches utilised by the aborigines of the place.

A getaway that many people have could be zoned in on leisure but it doesn't have to be like that. Internal peace and solace can be achieved through more enhancing ways; explore every one of these options and the typical notion of an escape will certainly be redefined.

Singapore bank debuts new branch blueprint - Kahuna ATM Solutions

Singapore bank debuts new branch blueprint

Development Bank of Singapore, an FI with four million customers and 200 branches in 15 markets, is implementing Wincor Nixdorf Cash Cycle Management Solutions concept in its newly designed flagship branch in Singapore?s Marina Bay Financial Center. Wincor Nixdorf helped DBS develop its new branch concept, implementing a customized model for automating cash processes at the counters and in the self-service zone. The updated location will serve as a blueprint for the bank?s branch network.

The completely renovated branch opened on Oct. 17, 2012, equipped with 22 CINEO systems ranging from automated teller safes to cash recycling systems. Their standardized banknote cassettes allow the use of cash reserves from deposit-centric teller safes and cash recycling systems to replenish withdrawal-centric systems, thus reducing the time and cost of handling cash.

?Wincor Nixdorf?s Cash Cycle Management Solution concept ideally complements the bank?s innovation strategy,? said Koh Cheng Hwee, head of DBS franchise. ?The early experience from the soft-opening phase shows that we have been able to significantly improve customer service in both the branch and self-service zone with CINEO systems. DBS is looking forward to optimizing cash management in the branch according to the CCMS approach to reduce the time and cost of cash handling.?

?It was DBS? desire to innovate and transform their branch banking business that led us to thinking harder and working together as a team to design the solutions implemented at MBFC,? said Ricardos Khoury, regional vice president for banking in Asia Pacific at Wincor Nixdorf. ??The result was a combination of state-of-the-art technology at the counter and self-service areas, practical innovation throughout the customer journey and most importantly, a new way of handling and recycling the cash within the branch environment.??

World Food Day 2012: Food scientists working to find sustainable solutions to world hunger

ScienceDaily (Oct. 15, 2012) ? In honor of World Food Day on October 16, 2012, the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) is highlighting the role of food science in environmental sustainability -- a key component to solving the world's hunger problem.

Over the past several decades, the food processing techniques developed by food scientists ensure that the resources required to produce raw food materials and ingredients for food manufacturing are used efficiently. While the modern food is system is capable of feeding nearly 7 billion people, there are still nearly one billion people that go hungry every day.

According to IFT's scientific review Feeding the World Today and Tomorrow: The Importance of Food Science and Technology (http://www.ift.org/Knowledge-Center/Read-IFT-Publications/Science-Reports/IFT-Scientific-Review-Feeding-the-World-Today-and-Tomorrow.aspx), "approximately 30 to 40 percent of raw food materials and ingredients are lost between the points of production and consumption. The magnitude of these losses is felt far greater in developing countries than industrialized countries."

This is why food scientists today are working harder than ever to develop new ways to further maximize the efficiency of food processing and its impact on the environment. In order to further communicate this concept, IFT is proud to unveil a new video (http://www.ift.org/Knowledge-Center/Learn-About-Food-Science/World-Without-Food-Science/Sustainability.aspx) discussing how food science and technology provide sustainable solutions throughout the food system.

"Food preservation and processing are what have helped us feed billions, but we have to come up with even newer technologies to feed the billions of people by 2050 ," said IFT President John Ruff. "As food scientists we are committed to further improving sustainability within the product lifecycle -- from sustainable ingredient sourcing, to product development, to waste management."

The World Without Food Science (http://www.ift.org/knowledge-center/learn-about-food-science/world-without-food-science.aspx) is a public education campaign created by IFT to generate awareness of the role that food science plays in ensuring a nutritious, safe and abundant food supply. This awareness initiative is designed to help the public understand where their food comes from so they can make informed decisions about the food they eat every day. As part of this effort, IFT provides practical consumer tips at www.iftfoodfacts.org. For more information on the impact of food science on world hunger, visit IFT's World Food Day web page (http://www.ift.org/newsroom/world-food-day.aspx).

Nigeria, Islamists may have committed crimes against humanity: HRW

LAGOS (Reuters) - Islamist sect Boko Haram and Nigerian security forces might well have committed crimes against humanity during three years of conflict that has killed at least 2,800 people, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on Thursday.

Crimes against humanity are offences that can lead to prosecution by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Boko Haram says it is fighting to create an Islamic state in Nigeria, and its fighters have killed hundreds in bomb and gun attacks since launching an uprising in 2009. The sect has become the No. 1 security threat to Africa's top energy producer.

The report documents multiple cases of abuses by Islamists, including brutal killings of Christian civilians and the assassination of Muslim clerics who criticise them.

Some of these attacks were "deliberate acts leading to population 'cleansing' based on religion or ethnicity". The ICC defines crimes against humanity as grave offences that are "widespread or systematic".

There was no immediate reaction from Boko Haram.

The report also accused Nigeria's joint military and police joint taskforce (JTF) of "physical abuse, secret detentions, extortion, burning of houses, stealing money during raids, and extrajudicial killings of suspects".

"Despite allegations of widespread security force abuses, the Nigerian authorities have rarely held anyone accountable ... further solidifying the culture of impunity for violence."

The study came as Nigeria's military tried to fend off accusations of a shooting spree in the insurgent stronghold of Maiduguri on Monday that residents say killed at least 30 civilians.

Asked about the report, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa, JTF spokesman for Borno state, of which Maiduguri is the capital, reiterated a statement on Wednesday that there was no evidence of such abuses.

"There is no established or recorded case of extrajudicial killing, torture, arson or arbitrary arrest by the JTF in Borno state", where most of the violence has occurred, he said.

"It is important to state that terrorists killed were during gun battles with the JTF troops", not executions, he said.

The military campaign against Boko Haram has had some success - limiting Boko Haram's ability to carry out large scale attacks, but the heavy-handedness has angered locals.

"These killings, and clashes with the group, have raised the death toll of those killed by Boko Haram or security forces to more than 2,800 people since 2009," the HRW report said.

Motherhood: Sweet Little Experiment | Skinny Mom | Tips for Moms ...

I was not prepared for motherhood.

Now don?t get me wrong, I did read a decent amount of books on pregnancy and whole birth. I attended prenatal classes and breastfeeding classes. But all in all, I think it?s pretty safe to say that nothing can really prepare you for motherhood besides motherhood itself. Yep, you gotta be in it to know it. In it to win it. Or?in it to navigate through a system of trial and error, ups and downs, jubilation and frustration, invigoration and exhaustion- the list goes on and on.

I think most parents experience some ineptitude when it comes to the reality of raising children. At the hospital, I remember feeling apprehensive to the fact that they were?allowing?Nick and I to take our 6lb. 12oz, baby girl home. Handing us this precious little angel and saying: She?s beautiful.?Good luck and goodbye.

The first thing I thought was:?Oh, Holy Lord. I have absolutely no idea what I?m doing.

Let me better explain myself. You see, when Ella was inside me, I had everything figured out. Her schedule, my schedule, sleep time, feed time, playtime, potty time. If I remember correctly, I think I even had a list of do?s and don?ts plastered on our kitchen wall. I was extremely organized and the house was really freaking clean. Nesting sure got the best of me in my ninth month! The nursery was stunning, but practical. We did every thing in neutral since we chose not to find out her sex. Tiny clothes were all neatly folded and put in their proper place. Piles of baby booties and teeny hats aligned perfectly on the shelf. I had every thingamabob baby item you could think of. Most of which I would come to find out would never get opened, let alone used. That?s okay though because they were a piece of the pregnancy puzzle and my puzzle was almost complete.?I reveled in the thought of perfection.

Then I had her. She was the most beautiful, innocent, precious soul. My heart was overflowing with love. Best of all, she was mine!?Then we took her home. And within an instant, all of my scheduling and planning and organizing pretty much went to hell.

Schedule? What schedule? This baby eats when she wants, sleeps when she wants, and poops?all of the time.

I was introduced to ?poop up the back.? Um hello, no one ever told me about that. Surprise! It?s disgusting.

    Laundry piled up.

    Diapers everywhere.

My breasts hanging out all day long.

    Nursing. Nursing. Nursing. And nursing.

    Pumping. Storing. Pumping. Storing.

    Glass of wine.

    Pumping. Dumping.

    Changing. Rocking. Changing. Rocking.

I was in a constant fog. We were up all hours of the night for days and weeks and months on end.

Our first trip to the pediatrician?s office, and we left her diaper bag at home. Yeah, you heard that right. Not in the waiting room, not in the car. AT HOME. Who does that? The nurse was looking at us like we were two brainless idiots. I was looking at Nick thinking: How the hell could you forget the diaper bag??!! I had the baby. I remembered her.?

Oh motherhood. With its winding roads. You never really know what?s around the corner or behind door number one..or two..or three for that matter.?You never really know what to expect or what you?ll forget. What kind of baby you?ll have or what kind of mother you?ll be.

    And thus begins our lifelong?

    sweet?little?BIG experiment.

Which is why it's easy to understand where LiveScience was coming from with their list of the top 10 studies that ruin your fun.

But we couldn't help but want to stand up for health. Health news isn't all gloom and doom! In the spirit of safeguarding your fun, here are a few of the best scientific findings about health we've come across. Add yours in the comments below!

    • Chocolate Is Good For You

Sweet news! Study after study has added evidence to the pile of research showing that treating yourself to a little bit of (dark) chocolate regularly can do your body a host of good. The most <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/26/chocolate-eating-lower-bmi-body-mass-index_n_1379368.html">recent research linked a few nibbles to a lower BMI</a> and other studies have found <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/28/chocolate-health-benefits_n_1383372.html">chocolate may reduce stroke, heart attack and diabetes risk</a>. Just keep in mind it's still high in calories and can pack unwanted fat and sugar. Look for chocolate with <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/eatingwell/chocolate-health_b_1262780.html#s684753&title=Con_Chocolate_Is">70 percent or higher cacao</a> for the biggest health punch, EatingWell reported.

    • Alcohol Is, Too

While red wine has earned a particularly healthful reputation thanks to its <a href="http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/95/2/326.abstract">heart-health claims</a>, turns out <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/25/alcohol-quality-of-life-moderate-consumption_n_1620104.html">alcohol in any form can improve quality of life</a> and lower the risk of certain diseases, including <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/13/alcohol-rheumatoid-arthritis-risk-moderate-_n_1662507.html">rheumatoid arthritis and breast cancer</a>. The key, of course, is moderation, which is classified as <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/alcohol/SC00024">two alcoholic drinks a day for men and one for women</a>, according to the Mayo Clinic. Cheers!

    • 30 Minutes Of Exercise Is Better Than 60

For anyone who uses the age-old "I just don't have time" excuse for skipping the gym, a small Danish study published this summer was welcome news. The researchers found that moderately overweight men who regularly exercised in 30-minute intervals over a period of three months <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/24/30-minute-workout-better-_n_1828773.html">lost about eight pounds</a>, whereas men who exercised for an hour at a time lost only six. And even <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-katz-md/exercise-pledge_b_1923795.html">just <em>20 minutes</em></a> is still "enough to matter" writes David Katz, M.D., director of the Yale Prevention Resarch Center and HuffPost blogger.

    • You Should Nap At Work

Insomnia leads to workplace accidents and mistakes that are costing <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/08/insomnia-workplace-errors-costs_n_1933704.html">more than $31 billion each year</a>, according to recent research. Skimping on sleep hurts memory and learning and can <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/30/sleep-deprivation-work-slower-productivity-speed_n_1720700.html">turn even the most efficient employees sluggish</a>. The good news is that productivity can <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/12/sleep-deprivation-productivity-harvard_n_1334877.html">jump by as much as 20 percent</a> with just a little more value placed on sleep. One of the ways to help employees do so is promoting a workplace culture that encourages <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/26/how-to-nap-at-work_n_1232352.html">midday siestas</a> (we have two nap rooms here at HuffPost headquarters). It doesn't have to be a long nap -- <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/26/how-to-nap-at-work_n_1232352.html#s640089&title=How_Long_Should">fewer than 30 minutes will do the trick</a> -- and will get you through the rest of the day better than that fourth cup of coffee.

    • Working Out Makes You Smarter

Many of us already exercise, whether it's to reach or maintain a healthy weight, to relieve stress or to reduce our risk of chronic diseases and health problems like heart disease, diabetes or obesity. But more and more research confirms the idea that <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/01/exercise-mental-benefits-_n_1923739.html">working out also benefits your brain</a>. A little physical fitness can sharpen thinking, help with problem solving and delay memory loss as we age.

    • Take Those Vacation Days

In today's constantly on-call work environments, taking a vacation can seem more like a splurge than simply some well-deserved, scheduled time off. But we shouldn't see things that way. <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2011/may/30/health/la-he-brain-on-vacation-20110530">"A vacation is not a luxury,"</a> Jens Pruessner, an associate professor of psychology, psychiatry, neurology and neurosurgery at McGill University, told the LA Times. "It's an investment in your health." Not only will it help you sleep and protect your heart, but the temporary break from daily stressors can actually <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/linden-schaffer/vacation-health_b_1631688.html">help you make smarter choices</a> upon returning to the office, and what boss doesn't want that?

    • A Little Stress Is Good For You

Everyone's got something putting them on edge and most of us know all too well the reasons too much stress is bad for us. But when there's no avoiding a tight deadline, it's at least a little comforting to know that in manageable levels, stress is essentially what's propelling you to the best of your abilities. <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204301404577171192704005250.html">Stress increases blood flow</a> "to help the brain, muscles and limbs meet a challenge, similar to the effects of aerobic exercise," the Wall Street Journal reported, giving you that "pumped up" feeling when you're busy kicking butt and taking names.

    • Eat More To Weigh Less

Yes, you need to cut calories (either by consuming fewer or burning them off with exercise or both) to drop pounds, but you don't have to deprive yourself to reach your happy weight. In fact, you can eat <em>more</em> of the right foods and still slim down. Foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains are rich in fiber, which <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-dean-ornish/all-calories-are-not-the_b_172459.html">fills you up faster and keeps you feeling full for longer</a> than the same number of calories of, say, French fries, explains HuffPost Medical Editor Dr. Dean Ornish, since fat is higher in calories than protein or carbs. Unsure where to start? <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/kristin-kirkpatrick-ms-rd-ld/weight-loss-tips_b_1838082.html">These six foods can help promote weight loss</a>.

    • Cuddling, Kissing, Love, Marriage -- Whatever It Is You're Doing, Keep Doing It

Whether you?re looking for love, keeping things casual or happily coupled, there are benefits of intimacy for just about everyone from the dating end of the spectrum to the couple who has been married for decades. Kissing and cuddling can <a href="http://www.shape.com/lifestyle/sex-and-love/5-health-reasons-make-time-cuddling">reduce stress</a>, and puckering up can also <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/06/national-kissing-day-health-benefits_n_1654548.html">burn calories and help keep teeth bacteria-free</a>. Falling in love can fight depression and even <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/02/07/AR2011020703564.html">speed up physical healing</a>, according to the Washington Post and married people have <a href="http://www.health.com/health/article/0,,20466753,00.html">lower rates of heart disease and diabetes</a> than their unattached peers, Health.com reported.

    • Laughter Really Is Medicine

Okay, so your doctor's not about to prescribe laughter, but bear with us: A good belly laugh <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16652129">burns calories</a>, increases blood flow and heart rate in a way that <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/06/laughter-yoga-benefits_n_1478960.html">could reduce heart attack risk</a> and may <a href="http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/26/5/1651.full">lower blood sugar levels</a>. And the people who laugh the most? <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/29/optimism-longer-life-longevity-genes-personality_n_1553967.html">They live the longest</a>.

Turns Hospitality Into Hope, One Touchdown At A Time

STAMFORD, Conn., Oct. 10, 2012 - Centerplate, the leading Event Hospitality partner to North America?s top entertainment venues, convention centers and sports franchises, announced today the launch of a national program, The Centerplate Promise, as part of the company?s core commitment to support and improve the communities in which Centerplate staff live and work. Building on the success of Centerplate?s ?Journey Home? initiative, which raised over $300,000 to fight homelessness in Baltimore, The Centerplate Promise will leverage Centerplate?s national portfolio of over 250 venues to combat child homelessness nationwide.

The Centerplate Promise will debut with two premier founding partners: the San Diego Chargers and San Francisco 49ers. Turning hospitality into hope, one touchdown at a time, the Centerplate Promise has already started raising money just over month into the 2012-2013 football season. The Centerplate Promise works by taking home team touchdowns scored by Centerplate?s partner NFL franchises and linking the on-field accomplishments to locally impactful charitable donations which will combat child homelessness.

?Centerplate takes incredible pride in partnering with the local community to make a positive impact on our friends and neighbors - both in and out of the stadium,? says Centerplate President and CEO Des Hague. ?Having the privilege of working for our NFL partners? incredible fans comes with a responsibility to be a community leader, and the Centerplate Promise is one of our ways of giving back.?

At Qualcomm Stadium, where Centerplate serves as the hospitality partner to the San Diego Chargers, The Centerplate Promise will donate $100 for every hometeam touchdown during Chargers home games. The funds will go towards combating child homelessness in San Diego through The Salvation Army?s Door of Hope.

?The Chargers have been working with the Salvation Army to help San Diego?s homeless for more than 10 years,? said A.G. Spanos, Executive Vice President and CEO of the Chargers. ?Now it?s nice to know that, with Centerplate?s help, every touchdown we score at home this year will also help combat child homelessness in San Diego by helping provide two of life?s essentials: food and shelter.? We?re proud to have Centerplate as a partner of the Chargers.?

At Candlestick Park, where Centerplate serves as the hospitality partner to the San Francisco 49ers, The Centerplate Promise will donate $100 for every hometeam touchdown during 49ers home games. The funds will go towards the 49ers/Taube/Koret Foundation?s Touchdowns for Kids program, helping at-risk Bay Area youth through the 49ers Foundation?s mission to keep kids Safe, on Track, and in School.?

?We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with both Centerplate as well as the Taube Family Foundation and the Koret Foundation, as we all share a common goal of providing much needed assistance to our local youth,? said 49ers Owner and Co-Chair Denise York.

?Through the Touchdowns for Kids program?s creative partnerships, we are excited to align the core values of the 49ers Foundation, to keep kids ?Safe, on Track and in School,? with some remarkable philanthropic organizations. Their generous charitable contribution to very special beneficiaries is commendable and we are honored to be part of this impactful program,? added 49ers Owner and Co-Chair John York.

Rule change that could have side-lined non-profit pet clinics ...

A rule change that could have put some area spay and neuter clinics out of business has been rejected.

According to advocates, a state veterinary board ruled on who can own the equipment and building where animals are fixed.

The plan would have effectively put non-profit service providers out of business if adopted.

The Irondale non-profit Alabama Spay/Neuter reports it would have cost $1 million to sell the equipment and facility to their doctor, which would have been required under the proposed rule change.

The clinic caters to people who can?t afford to fix their pets at a vet's office. Spaying a female cat costs about $80, versus $200 at for-profit establishments.

Workers predicted Humane Societies and shelters would have filled up under the plan. They also suggested the rule could have made euthanasia rates rise and increase the stray population.

?It?s very disheartening. It makes me sad. I feel that sometimes some people not might understand the situations of the people.. our clientele that come in here,?? said Brooke Bell of Alabama Spay/Neuter.

The State veterinary board reps did not get back with Alabama?s 13 by news time for comment.
